FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -------------------------- Of interest to editors/authors covering: Gourmet and Epicurian, Regional Events, General Editorial Tom Cruise, Survivor & Zinfandel California wine producers to host 'Zin in the City' SACRAMENTO, Calif. - April 15, 2003 /Send2Press/ -- One expects movie stars like Tom Cruise and TV shows like Survivor to amass huge fan clubs, but the thought of hoards of devoted and adoring fans gathered to express their fondness for a red wine varietal is surprising. Nonetheless, thousands of regular folk eagerly call themselves members of ZAP--Zinfandel Advocates and Producers. ZAP members plan festivals, educational events and tastings featuring the robust red grape, all in hopes of educating the public about the virtues of Zinfandel. ZAP produces the West's largest wine tasting every January in San Francisco. On Thursday, May 1, Zinfandel fans travel east to New York City with nearly 70 California wine producers to host "Zin in the City," an educational wine tasting open to the public. Winemakers will pour more than 120 Zins and discuss their wines and the mysteries of "America's Heritage Grape" with potential converts. "Zinfandel has stirred the souls of its fans, a dressed-down group of self-described anti-snobs, unpretentious in demeanor but relentless in their determination to promote Zinfandel as America's grape," said Amy Shipley, writing in the Washington Post. The event takes place at the 200 Fifth Club, 200 5th Avenue (in the Toy Building) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wine producers plan to demonstrate the regional characteristics of Zinfandel and explain the wine's association with the Wild West, the Gold Rush and rugged individualists. Tickets are $40 each or $30 for ZAP members and include wine tasting, a ZAP wine glass and Zin-friendly appetizers. ZAP membership is open to everyone and costs $30 per year for two people. More information can be found at the organization's website, zinfandel.org, or by calling 530 274-4900. Similar events are scheduled for Washington D.C. on April 24 and Boston on April 29.
