Winston Branch, University of California, Berkeley Art Professor, has curated the show which includes 79 artistic works of 10 men and seven women ages 26 to 62 years old. The artists from Africa, England, Germany, Iran and the Philippines have studied in the Bay Area and made it their home. "In the respect we give to every individual in their search for art, in our love for a culture we have inherited and of the cultures we have discovered we find the best in ourselves," said Branch. "We wanted this inaugural exhibition to represent the best part of us in Oakland and the caliber of the work in this show does just that." The dynamic collection of work includes glass sculpture, painting, photography, works on paper and sculpture. The Joyce Gordon Gallery, located at 406 14th Street in downtown Oakland, is a lifelong dream of its founder and namesake. Having attended art school Gordon has embraced art and artists her whole life. It is the first commercial gallery that reflects the art in Oakland which crosses racial, cultural and gender barriers, explains Gordon. The aim of the gallery is to respect the creative pursuit of the individual and hopefully make their work accessible to a broad public audience. Robert Redford, who has known Gordon for a number of years, is a believer in the power of art to revitalize a city and inspire a citizenry. He plans to attend the opening reception to pay tribute to the artist and to the gallery. "Not only is Joyce Gordon realizing her dream, but in doing so, she is also giving voice to artists, inspiration to audience and new energy to the Oakland community through this creative endeavor," said Redford. "It s an honor to support this impressive group of artists." The new gallery is comprised of 5,000 square feet on two floors. Gordon would like the space to become home to a versatile array of cultural activity, including book signings and lectures as well as spoken word recital, and of course, always, more art exhibitions. The Joyce Gordon Gallery is open to the public Monday - Saturday, 11am - 6pm and on Sunday from 1pm -6pm.
