PRESS RELEASE Of interest to editors and journalists covering: Sports/Football, College/University Athletics, Education, General Interest New Organization Calls a Foul on College Football's Bowl Championship System OKLAHOMA CITY, OK - Dec. 6, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- Eliminate the BCS (www.BCSux.com), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of the Bowl Championship System (BCS), today announced a call for signatures on a petition to replace the BCS with a National Play Off system. "The BCS is the most controversial system in sports," said Tim Flatt, Founder of Eliminate the BCS. "We call it the Bowl Corruption System because greed, and the power of big conferences and bowl committees are making decisions that should be made on the field. Not only do some of the best teams not win, some never even get the chance to play. We think it's time that national college football championships get decided on the field." There has been much public outcry over the BCS system, which depends upon polls such as the Associated Press, to select the teams that will play in the big money bowls. Many smaller schools have complained that while they may have the best season records in the nation, because of the BCS, they are never invited to compete. Here are just a few of the teams that have been overlooked by BCS in the last couple of years: - 2003 USC the #1 team in the AP poll does not get to play in the Championship game - 2004 Auburn goes undefeated for the season and does not get to play in Championship game - 2004 California ranked #5 in the BCS and does not get to play in a BCS game while the 13th and 21st ranked teams in the BCS get to play in the big games - 2004 There were five undefeated teams but only two get to play in the Championship game. "It is time we band together and apply some real pressure to the BCS," said Flatt. "We have a plan that will put significant pressure on NCAA to eliminate the BCS. Our first step is to gather five million signatures in the next 90 days, and we're asking everyone that believes in fair play to sign the petition and help us stop the BCS from ruining the most exciting game in the world."
