Educational Wildfire Resource Empowers Homeowners and Aids Firefighters

GRANITE BAY, Calif., April 4 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Prepare Stay Defend (PSD), a California non-profit organization, has launched a web site that empowers homeowners against wildfires; they are the first organization of its kind to support homeowners, nationwide, through their educational web site and on-line fire training.

Homeowners will be encouraged to organize Neighborhood Fire Watch Groups and Fire Brigades. PSD consultants will be available to help homeowners with fire law and regulation interpretations, assessing the wildfire suppression capabilities of their local fire department, surveying neighborhood and community infrastructures, help establish and demonstrate new "home hardening" specifications for developers and other strategic wildfire protection planning issues.

Bowman explains that since 1990, in California alone, there have been over 15,000 structures lost in wildfire. Most homes are lost due to burning embers falling onto and around the home causing spot fires.

"The number of destroyed homes during a wildfire is related to the lack of firefighting resources and most residents are killed during the evacuation process," Bowman added. PSD believes that the homeowner should also be trained on how to use their prepared home as a shelter.

NBFAA Awards $20,000 in Scholarships to Children of Police, Fire Officials

IRVING, Texas - July 9 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- There is nothing quite like seeing dreams come true, but that's just what happened recently thanks to the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA). Through the association's Youth Scholarship Program, NBFAA members awarded $20,000 in college scholarships to three children of police and fire officials.

The first place winner, Leah Mainiero of Connecticut, received a $10,000 scholarship, while second place winner Harrison Turner from Pennsylvania and third place winner, Megan Crawley of New Jersey were awarded $7,500 and $2,500 respectively. The $20,000 total is double the amount of previous awards.

The scoring for the youth scholarship program is based on academic achievement, test scores, community activity and an essay titled, "What it means to ME to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community." Since the NBFAA Youth Scholarship Program was created in 1996, the association and its affiliated chartered chapters have donated more than $250,000 in scholarship funds to students whose parents are police and fire officials.

Mainiero, a senior at Pomperaug Regional High School in Southbury, Conn., was "ecstatic" when she got the call. "I was so excited. When I hung up the phone, I jumped up and down and screamed with my mom," Mainiero said. The future International Relations major at John Hopkins University said that she's always been interested in culture and politics because of her father's job as a Waterbury, Conn. police sergeant.

"My father's service in the community has had a profound and lasting impact on me personally. Not only do I respect, appreciate and admire my father's work, but through it I have developed a greater understanding of the world around me...Most people work in pursuit of their own personal version of the American dream; my father works to protect their freedom to do so," wrote Mainiero in her essay.

A senior at North Allegheny High School in Wexford, Pa., an Eagle Scout and a National Merit Finalist, the second place winner also wrote about the pride he feels about his father's role as a volunteer firefighter for the Bradford Woods Volunteer Fire Company.

"I cannot help but ask myself what compels a man with a good life, and a fairly comfortable one, to potentially risk his life and expect nothing in return," he wrote. "My dad wants to help others, and he knows that if our house was burning, we would need volunteer firefighters."

Like Mainiero, Turner was excited about winning the award. "This money is going to be a great help," he explained. His future plans include studying mathematics at Carnegie Mellon.

Crawley, the third place winner from Sea Girt, N.J. Point Pleasant Beach High School plans to attend Bucknell University to study bio-chemistry and hopes to one day work in genetic research. In her essay, Crawley wrote about her dad's life as a volunteer firefighter with the Sea Girt Fire Company.

Children of Police and Fire Officials to Benefit from $20,000 in Scholarship

IRVING, Texas - Feb. 21 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) has announced that the association has doubled funding of its national Youth Scholarship Program to $20,000. Winners of the national awards will receive $10,000 for first place, $7,500 for second place and $2,500 for third place.

Since the NBFAA Youth Scholarship Program was created in 1996, the association and its affiliated Chartered State Associations (CSA) have donated more than $250,000 in scholarship funds to students whose parents are police and fire officials.

Scholarship recipients are chosen on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation and an essay on "What it means to me to have my parent or guardian involved in securing our community."

Department of Labor Approves NBFAA National Apprenticeship Program

IRVING, Texas - Oct. 23 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship (OA) has approved NBFAA's National Guidelines for Apprenticeship Standards for the occupation of Protective Signal Installer (Fire/Life Safety & Electronic Security Installer).

"Everyone in our industry understands the need to expand the labor pool, to attract the very best technicians, and to provide a mechanism to introduce and train on new products, technologies and applications. We now have that in our Fire/Life Safety and Electronic Security Apprenticeship Program," said NBFAA President George P. Gunning. "This program will provide a foundation of knowledge that allows technicians to advance in their profession and improve the ability of the industry to recruit, train and retain the very best technicians from a competitive labor pool."

Reunions will take place over a two-day period and will be hosted, bi-annually, in a hotel setting. The gatherings will be informal and educative. The purpose is to offer emotional support to people who continue to struggle with the trauma of September 11.

Killeen holds two Master Degrees: Counseling Psychology and Theology, and is a nationally recognized, stress-management therapist, and a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. When September 11 happened, Killeen played an active counseling role, and worked directly with the Port Authority police force who suffered a loss of 37 officers.

Killeen's eclectic background in healthcare, theology and law enforcement makes him a much sought after talk show host. As host and producer of "The Police Connection Radio Show" and author of the political serial thriller "The Infidel Factor", he has been interviewed on many radio and television programs, including Court TV's "Crier Today," LETN (Law Enforcement Television Network), CNBC-TV, WOR Radio 710AM and NPR.

Killeen currently serves as a consultant with police unions and federal agencies as a stress specialist.
