ANNAPOLIS, MD /Send2Press Newswire/ -- Barnes and Noble Bookstores has announced "The Parthenon Code: Mankind's History in Marble" by Annapolis author Robert Bowie Johnson, Jr. as one of five books selected for special recognition nationwide during its Small Press Celebration throughout March. The publisher, Solving Light Books, is also located in Annapolis.
The Small Press Center, the Publishers Marketing Association, the Independent Book Publishers Association, and Barnes and Noble collaborate to produce Small Press Month, highlighting the valuable work produced by independent book publishers. The slogan for this year is "In the world of publishing, size doesn't matter it's what's between the covers that counts!"
Between the covers, "The Parthenon Code," a hardback, contains 288 pages, 250 illustrations, and a presentation that has been called by the Midwest Book Review, "One of the most original, engaging, thoughtful, and thought-provoking works . . . an iconoclastic, mind-stimulating, and strongly recommended read." Author Johnson connects Greek myth and art with the early events described in the Book of Genesis, and deciphers the meaning of the Parthenon sculptures for the first time in more than 2,000 years. Solving Light Books has chosen this slogan to promote the title: "While 'The DaVinci Code' is fictional, and 'The Bible Code' is bogus, 'The Parthenon Code' presents a genuine ancient artists' code revealing the true history of mankind."
One of the many things that makes "The Parthenon Code" so unique is the reconstruction of all the figures on the east pediment of the Parthenon by computer artist, Holmes Bryant, based on the physical evidence. This had never been attempted before because scholars did not understand the overall message of the pediment, nor had they correctly identified all the figures. Also, the book features seventeen vase images, and one sculpted image of Noah from the ancient Greek world. According to Johnson, the Greeks called him Nereus, the "Wet One," and dated the development of their contrary religious outlook from the latter days of the patriarch's life.
"The Parthenon Code" offers the first sensible explanation for Athena's cloak, once depicted in the center of the east frieze of the Parthenon, now on display at the British Museum in London. The book also presents a vase from 490 BC by an artist named Kleophrades who explained in a series of comic-book-like panels the origin of the women warriors known as Amazons.
Mr. Johnson has been studying the Sacred Scriptures, Greek myth, Greek art, and the Parthenon since 1984. He is a graduate of West Point and an airborne ranger infantry veteran of Viet Nam. Mr. Johnson's other books include "Athena and Eden: The Hidden Meaning of the Parthenon's East Faade," and "Athena and Kain: The True Meaning of Greek Myth."
"I am thrilled to have my book chosen for such an honor by Barnes and Noble. The ancient Greeks, who created the living basis of our culture, meant for us to understand their art and their so-called myths. They were telling us who they were, where they came from, and what they believed. I am very thankful that America's premier book chain is taking my work seriously," Mr. Johnson said.

Now in its ninth year, Small Press Month celebrates the independent spirit of small publishers and showcases the fruits of their labor. "America's small, independent publishers are more important to the publishing industry than ever before," Karin Taylor, Executive Director of the Small Press Center in New York, says. "Mr. Johnson's book, 'The Parthenon Code' is an indication of the fine quality and diversity of books produced by independent publishers in America today," she added.
In addition to "The Parthenon Code: Mankind's History in Marble," Barnes and Noble has selected these four books: "The Bonus Army: An American Epic" by Paul Dickson and Thomas B. Allen; "Harry Potter and Philosophy" by David Baggett, Shawn Klein and William Irvin; "True Prosperity" by Yehuda Berg; and "The Witches Almanac: Spring 2005 to Spring 2006" by Elizabeth Pepper and John Wilcock.
