Tom Mangelsen Named as One of American Photo's 100 Most Important People in Photography
"Mangelsen, 59, is not well known by museum curators, but he is without a doubt one of this country's most successful wildlife photographers," said David Schonauer, Editor-in-Chief of American Photo Magazine, in his article "The 100 Most Important People in Photography." "His accessible images-shot in Alaska, Africa, Canada, and near his home at the foot of the Teton mountain range in Jackson, Wyoming-depict animals in styles that range from the merely adorable to the mighty and majestic...." Nebraska native Thomas D. Mangelsen has long been recognized as one of the world's premier nature photographers. His images have been seen and admired by millions. Mangelsen's photographs have appeared in National Geographic, Audubon, National Wildlife, Smithsonian, Natural History, Newsweek, American Photo, Wildlife Art, and other publications. The Royal Photographic Society honored Mangelsen with an Honorary Fellowship in 2002. He received the North American Nature Photographer Association's (NANPA) Outstanding Nature Photographer of the Year 2000 award, and was named the 1994 Wildlife Photographer of the Year by the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC) as well as British Gas. His work has been displayed in natural history museums across the United States, Canada and Europe.
