WUSA*9 TV Brings Teen Driver Training Program to Frederick MD
Published: Wed, 13 Jul 2005, 11:49:00 EDT
FREDERICK, MD - July 13 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Car crashes are the number one killer of teenagers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. And, the National Safety Council reports that the number of motor vehicle crashes involving teen drivers in Maryland, per 10,000 licensed teen drivers, has been on the rise since 1996. Much of the reason for these statistics is that new drivers are not given hands-on accident avoidance and defensive driving training. The nationally-acclaimed New Driver Car Control Clinic(R) from Advanced Car Control Techniques (www.carcontrol.com) teaches only accident avoidance and defensive driving to teens and their parents. Sponsored by WUSA*9 Television, the Clinic will be in Frederick, Maryland the weekend of July 29, 30 and 31.
"This is the missing link in driver education," says Randal Stanley, news director of WUSA*9 TV. "It goes beyond the basics, involves the parents and concentrates on training teen drivers what to expect and how to respond when their car enters the ‘emergency zone.’ For years," Stanley continues, "we have reported on these tragedies. We have decided to become a part of the solution by sponsoring this effective and proven training in the Washington DC area."
"Driving is a psychomotor skill," says Clinic founder David Thompson. "Just like learning to play the piano requires an actual keyboard, so does learning to control an automobile in an emergency require one to actually drive a car. Our Clinic is based on the idea that in order to properly manage those inevitable first few accident situations, drivers must learn and practice the proper responses."
Thompson’s theory is borne out by a recent analysis conducted by the Florida Department of Highways Safety and Motor Vehicles. In the four-year study, the crash occurrence of a significant sample of New Driver Car Control Clinic graduates was tracked and compared to Florida drivers of the same age that had not received the training. The Department’s findings were that, over the four years, New Driver Car Control Clinic graduates had 77% fewer crashes than their peers.
Clinic students and their parents (Thompson does not accept a teen without a parent) perform a series of exercises learning how to use their eyes, hands and feet to steer away from obstacles while braking suddenly and heavily. These exercises are performed both on dry and wet pavement. Thompson's method, borne out by the statistical evidence, is that unless you have pre-programmed your brain to react properly in a panic situation, you will panic, you will lock up the brakes and you will crash.
Each Clinic is limited to 10 parent-teen teams and costs $149 per team. Teams attend a 90-minute classroom session Friday, July 29; and then choose one four-hour behind the wheel session on either Saturday or Sunday, July 30 or 31. Teens need to have at least a Learner's Permit. Each team receives a 56-page workbook and a 45-minute DVD detailing all exercises performed in the Clinic so that they may continue to practice on their own, and a Certificate of Completion for submission to their insurance company for a possible discount.
