Lisa D. McGill Kicks Off Caribbean Heritage Month with a Book Signing at Yale Bookstore

NEW HAVEN, CT - May 25 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Lisa D. McGill, author of Constructing Black Selves: Caribbean American Narratives and the Second Generation (published by NYU Press in November 2005) returns to New Haven and her alma mater, Yale University, to kick off National Caribbean American Heritage Month with a Thursday, June 1st book signing and reception at the Yale Barnes & Noble Bookstore (77 Broadway) at 6PM. The author is the principal of a diversity and equity consultancy, LM Strategies Consulting, LLC (www.lmstrategies.net), based in the South Suburbs of her native Chicago.

"Constructing Black Selves celebrates examples of how very different second-generation Caribbean Americans - Harry Belafonte, Paule Marshall, Audre Lorde, Piri Thomas and the hip-hop merengue artists Proyecto Uno - discovered new and evocative ways to express their Caribbean identity while influencing the culture, literature and music of America," McGill relates. "National Caribbean Heritage Month reflects a long-awaited acknowledgement of the important role Caribbean Americans have played in our history. I am thrilled to be a part of the celebration."

Constructing Black Selves explores the cultural production of second-generation Caribbean immigrants in the United States after World War II as a prism for understanding the formation of Caribbean American identity. The book highlights ways in which Caribbean identity has been transformed by mass migration to urban landscapes, as well as the dynamic and sometimes conflicted relationship between Caribbean American and African American cultural politics.

Constructing Black Selves is an important contribution to the studies of twentieth-century U.S. immigration, African American and Afro-Caribbean history and literature, and theories of ethnicity and race.

Lisa D. McGill received her doctorate in American Studies at Yale University. As the principal of LM Strategies Consulting, she works with grantmaking institutions to strengthen leadership and nonprofit capacity in underrepresented communities.
