Published: Thu, 03 May 2007, 18:00:00 EDT
ATLANTA, Ga. - May 3 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Evening at Emory, a program of Emory University's Center for Lifelong Learning, is providing a unique opportunity for people to have a behind-the-scenes peek at the "Gardener's Diary" - a daily program appearing on Home and Garden Television (HGTV); the first class will be held on May 15 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. and is entitled "Outstanding Ornamentals for Your Georgia Garden."
Erica Glasener, the "Gardener's Diary" host of 12 years, will entertain while providing practical instruction during her presentation on the secrets of successful gardening in Georgia.
"Whether starting from scratch or starting over, attendees will take away new ideas for creating a dynamic garden that appeals to all the senses," Glasener said.
In addition, Glasener will highlight combinations for sun and shade; provide tips on how to group similar colors for the best effect and discuss the importance of foliage in Southern landscapes. Soil preparation; the value of a plan; foundation plants; and the role of hardscapes such as walls, paths, fences and water features will also be addressed.
Glasener is a horticulturist and author. She lives and gardens in Atlanta and writes a bi-weekly column on plants and garden design for the "Atlanta Journal-Constitution." She is the co-author of "The Georgia Gardener's Guide" and "Month-By-Month Gardening in Georgia." Her articles have appeared in "The New York Times," "The Farmer's Almanac," and "Atlanta Magazine." She has a personal passion for heirloom roses, bulbs, perennials, shrubs and trees and strives to have fresh flowers and foliage to be enjoyed throughout the year.
"This class is the first in our new 'Home and Garden Series' that brings in nationally-recognized experts for interactive learning opportunities," Lisa Kozicki, the program's director said. "We are very excited to have Erica as an integral part of this series."
Class attendees will take away tips and techniques that will allow them to enjoy their gardens for years to come and they will also receive an annual or perennial plant to jump start their landscape transformation. Erica will give each participant a copy of her book, "Georgia Gardener's Guide," as part of the class and her newest edition of "Month-by-Month Gardening in Georgia" will be available for purchase.
Other upcoming sessions include: "Elegant Entertaining" with Paul Brummer, creator of New York's Tavern on the Green signature, over-the-top holiday decor; and "Love the House You Live In" with Clinton Smith, editor-in-chief of "Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles."
"The love of learning should be a lifelong passion," Kozicki said. "And, this series not only provides people with learning opportunities, but also empowers them and enriches their lives through non-credit adult education."
Evening at Emory offers academically challenging, socially-engaging classes in a wide variety of areas that range from foreign language and dance to writing a first novel and wine tasting.
