SUGAR LAND, Texas, Jan. 19, 2015 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — TeDan Surgical Innovations (TSI) today announced the release of the Small Incision Retractor System™, or SIS Retractor™, for use when a standard sternotomy is required. An official launch will be held later this week at the STS meeting in San Diego.

A conventional sternotomy often requires a large incision and extended healing time. The SIS Retractor is deployed subcutaneously through a 5-10 cm incision providing adequate access and mobility while significantly reducing the incision size. Additionally, traumatic retraction of the skin is eliminated, reducing the potential for ischemia. As opposed to i.e. upper mini-sternotomy, patients will have positive cosmetic benefits as the incision leaves a smaller scar that is located well below the manubrium.

“This is a very nice meeting point between conventional surgery and true minimal-access surgery, which few surgeons are willing to embrace. The patient gets a smaller skin incision that is not typically visible with low-cut shirts/blouses and the surgeon gets to do surgery in a way that feels very typical, safe and familiar, since it combines the luxury of full sternotomy and complete sternal spreading but with a smaller skin incision,” said Dr. Jason Sperling, who has used the retractor to perform a broad range of surgeries, including CABG, mitral and aortic valve surgery. “Patient satisfaction has been very high, and I have not had to compromise the safety of full sternotomy access to the heart.”

The SIS Retractor is the latest addition to the cardiothoracic portfolio at TSI which includes retractors and instruments that enable most cardiac and thoracic procedures to be performed through very small incisions.

“TSI’s launch of the Small Incision Retractor System marks an important milestone in our cardiothoracic product line,” said Terry Johnston, General Manager of TeDan Surgical Innovations. “It builds upon our established and proven products while offering a new and improved way to perform procedures that require the access of a full sternotomy that previously were not able to be easily performed with minimally invasive access.”
