But while Australians today pride themselves on diversity and inclusion, this was not always the case. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/nitv\/article\/institutional-racism-is-at-work-in-australia-how-does-it-affect-indigenous-people\/ds4mvd3ft\">ingrained bias and prejudice can die hard<\/a>. This is why volunteers from the Church of Scientology brought their human rights education initiative to the festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/24-0306-s2p-coscanberra-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"26th Canberra National Multicultural Festival\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-103948\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/24-0306-s2p-coscanberra-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/24-0306-s2p-coscanberra-800x600-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/24-0306-s2p-coscanberra-800x600-200x150.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/><em>Photo caption: Volunteers from the Church of Scientology brought Youth for Human Rights, the human rights campaign they support, to the 26th Canberra National Multicultural Festival.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Despite its diversity today, with nearly 30 percent of Australia\u2019s population <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/people\/population\/australias-population-country-birth\/latest-release\">born overseas<\/a>, cultural and ethnic inclusion is a relatively new concept.<\/p>\n<p>From the devastating treatment of the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/nitv\/article\/institutional-racism-is-at-work-in-australia-how-does-it-affect-indigenous-people\/ds4mvd3ft\">First Nation people<\/a> beginning with England\u2019s colonization, to the 1901 \u201cWhite Australia Policy\u201d that continued through World War II, bias and prejudice was ingrained in the culture, and, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1048984322000583?via%3Dihub\">according to a 2023 Monash University study<\/a>, these attitudes persist to this day.<\/p>\n<p>This is why educating youth on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is essential. And what better place to share the campaign than at a festival like this that promotes respect for different cultures, beliefs and attitudes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthforhumanrights.org\/download\/\">Youth for Human Rights International\u2019s materials<\/a> help people of all ages understand the 30 rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights \u2014 rights that apply to all people, all cultures and all geographic zones.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers from the Church of Scientology reached out to youth with <em>What Are Human Rights? <\/em>booklets, materials produced by the Church-sponsored human rights educational campaign. Those staffing festival booths were happy to accept sets of these materials for visitors to take home with them.<\/p>\n<p>Educators in countries around the world routinely comment on how Youth for Human Rights materials change attitudes by reaching kids where they live. \u201cStudent groups to whom I\u2019ve shown the Youth for Human Rights video, <em>The Story of Human Rights<\/em> found it inspiring. They perceived it as a catalyst for social change and becoming more involved in their communities,\u201d said one educator. They really take home the message that human rights start with people like them.<\/p>\n<p>The materials \u201cdefinitely get students\u2019 attention,\u201d said a middle school teacher. \u201cI\u2019ve noticed how much more aware my students are of each other\u2019s feelings and they have begun, some for the first time, to have an awareness of their own rights as human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that this program affects me by creating a deeper regard toward human rights,\u201d said a student age 14. \u201cFrom this point on, I\u2019ll feel more empathetic and respectful of others\u2019 rights and change how others think about what we deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrights.com\/\">United for Human Rights<\/a> and its program for young people, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthforhumanrights.org\/\">Youth for Human Rights<\/a>, are inspired by author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L.
