Despite his long history of drug abuse, he was undergoing ketamine infusion therapy\u2014a procedure that has never been approved by the FDA<\/a>.<\/p>\n Medscape, an online resource for physicians and healthcare professionals, reports, \u201cThe number of ketamine clinics has risen dramatically, with little to no oversight,\u201d and \u201cthis comes at a time when recreational use of ketamine, known on the street as \u2018Special K,\u2019 is rising, and reports to poison control centers<\/a> and drug seizures by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are climbing.\u201d<\/p>\n According to USA Today<\/em><\/a>, experts such as Dr. Peter Grinspoon of Massachusetts General Hospital have revealed inherent dangers of ketamine therapy, particularly for individuals with a history of substance abuse. Dr. Fahmi Farah, a cardiologist in Fort Worth, Texas, says ketamine is \u201cnot a normal drug to be used by a regular person at all.\u201d She emphasized ketamine is traditionally used in controlled medical settings such as operating rooms. It is not authorized for treatment of depression, anxiety and drug dependency.<\/p>\n The New York Times<\/em><\/a> reports that while \u201cdrowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of an opioid, buprenorphine\u201d contributed to Perry\u2019s death, the autopsy \u201cascribed his death primarily to \u2018the acute effects of ketamine.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Citizen\u2019s Commission on Human Rights International<\/a> has called for an inquiry into the risks of ketamine, often dispensed through unregulated ketamine infusion clinics.<\/p>\n Citizens Commission on Human Rights is an international mental health watchdog founded in 1969 by the Church of Scientology.
