Special guest speaker was Mr. Butch Yarnell, Eastern Washington &amp; Idaho Regional Coordinator for <a href=\"https:\/\/sharedhope.org\/\">Shared Hope International<\/a>, an organization that strives to bring an end to sex trafficking through a three-pronged approach of prevention, outreach and intervention services, and to bring justice to survivors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/25-0108-s2p-COS-SEAseminar-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"Butch Yarnell, Coordinator for Shared Hope International\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-123220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/25-0108-s2p-COS-SEAseminar-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/25-0108-s2p-COS-SEAseminar-800x600-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.send2press.com\/wire\/images\/25-0108-s2p-COS-SEAseminar-800x600-200x150.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/><em>Photo caption: Mr. Butch Yarnell, Eastern Washington &amp; Idaho Regional Coordinator for Shared Hope International, educated those attending the conference about sex trafficking in Washington state and the urgency of taking action to end it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Echoing the UN\u2019s theme for the day, \u201cOur Rights, Our Future, Right Now,\u201d Mr. Yarnell spoke with passion and conviction on the importance of putting an end to sex trafficking, an issue of critical importance to Washington state residents.<\/p>\n<p>Yarnell informed those attending of legislation passed in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=6006&amp;Year=2023&amp;Initiative=false\">Senate Bill 6006<\/a>, that supports victims of human trafficking and sexual abuse. This bill gives victims the ability to gain civil orders of protection from traffickers, allows for out-of-court statements, provides for victim compensation without any time limitations, and eliminates the statute of limitations for sex trafficking prosecutions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atg.wa.gov\/human-trafficking\">Washington\u2019s Task Force Against Trafficking of Persons reports<\/a> that the state \u201cis a hotbed for the recruitment, transportation and sale of people for labor.\u201d The report reveals that \u201cSeattle is part of a trafficking circuit that can include Honolulu, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Portland, Vancouver (Clark County), Yakima and Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/humantraffickinghotline.org\/en\/statistics\/washington\">National Human Trafficking Hotline<\/a> reported last year that 202 sex trafficking and labor trafficking cases were identified in Washington State involving 367 victims.<\/p>\n<p>The International Labor Organization estimates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilo.org\/topics-and-sectors\/forced-labour-modern-slavery-and-trafficking-persons\">27.6 million men, women and childre<\/a>n are subjected to forced labor, generating some 236 billion $US in illegal profits every year.<\/p>\n<p>Dave Scattergood, a local advocate with Youth for Human Rights, presented the organization\u2019s free educational materials at the open house. The booklets and videos, based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), can be ordered from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthforhumanrights.org\/educators\/education-package-details.html\">Youth for Human Rights website,<\/a> which also offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthforhumanrights.org\/course\/\">free online course<\/a> on the UDHR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that our youth are educated on their basic human rights to help prevent them becoming victims of human trafficking crimes,\u201d said Scattergood.<\/p>\n<p>The Church of Scientology supports United for Human Rights and its youth initiative, Youth for Human Rights.
