But psychiatry doubles down, pushing more dangerous interventions instead.\u201d \u2013 Jan Eastgate, President CCHR International.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>These brain stimulation devices were \u201ccleared\u201d by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or approved under Humanitarian Device Exemptions (HDEs), bypassing the rigorous testing normally required of most medical devices. Many were greenlighted based on the device delivering ECT\u2014a practice known for causing brain damage, memory loss, and even death.[1]<\/p>\n<p>Even industry insiders acknowledge concerns. \u201cThe precise physiological mechanisms of DBS are not yet fully understood,\u201d admits one clinical review.[2] A professor of psychiatry at Brown University\u2019s Alpert Medical School, put it more starkly: \u201cThis really is a kind of mind control.\u201d[3]<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201ctreatment-resistant\u201d is a psychiatric sleight of hand, now used to justify a global neurostimulation industry projected to hit $51 billion by 2030. \u00a0Labeling up to 60% of psychiatric patients as \u201cresistant\u201d creates a false pretext for experimental interventions.[4] Meanwhile, 25% of patients develop drug tolerance within weeks, prompting ever-riskier \u201csolutions.\u201d[5]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electroshock: Psychiatry\u2019s Recycled Blunder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ECT involves sending up to 460 volts through the brain to trigger seizures. Contrary to PR spin, Eastgate says, experts report modern ECT is no safer\u2014voltage levels are higher than when broken bones were common due to convulsions.[6]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FDA Loophole<\/strong>: Grandfathered in without trials in 1976. In 2018, the FDA reclassified some ECT uses as \u201clow risk,\u201d even for children as young as 13. Over 2,400 public comments opposed this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global Condemnation<\/strong>: The World Health Organization and United Nations consider ECT on children or the non-consenting a form of torture.[7]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Medical Harm<\/strong>: Neurologists equate ECT\u2019s effects to traumatic brain injury.[8] Patients are 44 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population. One in 15 ECT patients face life-threatening cardiac issues.[9]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Financial Cost<\/strong>: A $3\u20135.4 billion industry. Medicaid spent $9 million on ECT in 2023 across 27 states.[10] The VA and Department of Defense have administered it to veterans and children under age five.[11]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Attorney Jonathan Emord, who has challenged the FDA\u2019s approval processes, stated: \u201cAll patients who receive ECT suffer memory loss and cognitive impairment\u2026 many forgetting much of their lives before treatment.\u201d A 2020 peer-reviewed review concluded ECT has \u201cno place in evidence-based medicine.\u201d[12]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brain-Altering Experiments in Disguise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)<\/strong>: Electrodes are surgically implanted into the brain, powered by a device in the chest.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FDA Fast Track<\/strong>: Approved via Humanitarian Device Exemption for OCD in 2009 without efficacy data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Harms<\/strong>: Stroke, hemorrhage, hallucinations, sexual dysfunction, apathy, and suicide attempts.[13]<\/li>\n<li><strong>Patient Testimonies<\/strong>: Participants in failed DBS trials report cognitive decline and emotional deterioration.[14]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS)<\/strong>: Electrical stimulation delivered via electrodes wrapped around the vagus nerve near the heart.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FDA<\/strong>: Approved in 2005 for \u201ctreatment-resistant depression\u201d despite lacking robust evidence.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Risks<\/strong>: Nerve damage, infection, hoarseness, breathing difficulty. The FDA has logged over 10,000 complaints involving death, injury, or device malfunction.[15]<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cost<\/strong>: Averaging $30,000+.[16]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)<\/strong>: Magnetic pulses are aimed at the brain over six weeks.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Youth Approval<\/strong>: Cleared in 2008 for adults, and in 2024 for adolescents as young as 15.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Side Effects<\/strong>: \u201cBrain fog,\u201d seizures, mood swings. One patient said: \u201cThis treatment destroyed my life\u2026. It gave me false hope.\u201d[17]<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price Tag<\/strong>: Up to $300 per session; full courses can reach $15,000.[18]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New variants\u2014rTMS, iTBS, cTBS\u2014deliver hundreds of brain pulses per session with unknown long-term risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Proof of Disease, No Justification for Devices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite the sophistication of these procedures, there is still no objective medical test to diagnose any psychiatric disorder. No blood test. No brain scan. No biomarker.[19]<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Thomas Insel, former director of the National Institute for Mental Health advised: \u201cUnlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma, or AIDS, the DSM [Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders] diagnoses are based on a consensus\u2026 not any objective laboratory measure.\u201d[20]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the patient that\u2019s resistant\u2014it\u2019s the system that\u2019s resistant to accountability,\u201d Eastgate said. \u201cIn any other field, if the intervention failed, the treatment would be reevaluated. But psychiatry doubles down, pushing more dangerous interventions instead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>CCHR urges policymakers to:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>End all use of ECT and brain stimulation devices for the treatment of mental issues, and end ECT\u2019s role as a predicate device for newer technologies.<\/li>\n<li>Support humane, non-invasive, non-drug, non-brain stimulation solutions that respect patient dignity and avoid neurological and other physical harm.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cchrint.org\/about-us\/\">CCHR<\/a>, established in 1969 by the Church of Scientology and psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Szasz has a record of reforms that include banning lethal Deep Sleep Treatment, outlawing ECT use on children in several U.S. states, and securing global recognition for patient rights.
