SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 4, 2020 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Climate action group 350 Bay Area Action<\/a> today announced climate report cards, to be issued for 2020 Bay Area candidates for the California Assembly and the state Senate. Local candidates in crucial city council and supervisorial races will also be rated. The group will endorse candidates rated as true climate champions in key regional legislative races, and selected candidates in local elections as well.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cClimate change is now the #1 priority for California voters<\/a>, and climate impacts such as fires<\/a> and drought<\/a> are buffeting the state,\u201d said Judy Pope, co-lead of the 350 Bay Area Action Electoral Committee. \u201cWith our new climate report cards, we will make it easy for voters to act on climate, their #1 concern.\u201d<\/p>\n

California is seen worldwide as a leader on climate change, ever since the passage of the Global Warming Solutions Act, Assembly Bill 32 (AB 32<\/a>), in 2006. The 2020 goal, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020, was met in 2016.<\/p>\n

A subsequent bill, SB 32, updated California\u2019s climate targets – which, while ambitious, are not aggressive enough to meet science-based requirements. And many local governments, in California and elsewhere, have passed Climate Emergency resolutions<\/a>. But the state is falling behind<\/a> the 2030 goal, a 40% cut from those levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are seeing a rapid increase in awareness, especially among young people, that the climate crisis is happening right here and right now,\u201d said Laura Neish, Executive Director of 350 Bay Area Action. \u201cPoliticians have often resisted these concerns in favor of moneyed interests. So we\u2019re setting out to help get people elected who are listening to all of their constituents, especially the young. We want to elect people who will lead on urgently implementing solutions that will reduce climate- and health-harming emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

350 Bay Area Action is now reaching out to general election candidates and their campaigns with a questionnaire, seeking their positions on climate-related issues relevant to California<\/a>. Current bills include SB 54, which bans single-use plastics, and AB 345, which establishes a buffer zone around schools, health clinics, and homes from oil and gas infrastructure. Local governments are being urged to pass Climate Emergency resolutions, to require the decarbonization of new buildings, and more.<\/p>\n

In the coming weeks, questionnaire results will be tabulated, and answers will be publicized. The group will then rate candidates, issue candidate report cards, and announce endorsements.<\/p>\n
