Co-author Loyd Auerbach, a world-renowned parapsychologist, has written several non-fiction books on ghosts, psychic dreaming and other things that go bump in the night. Near Death, the first book in the Raney\/Daye Investigation series, was written by Rich Hosek, Arnold Rudnick and Loyd Auerbach, who worked from Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, respectively, to adapt a script they wrote together into a \u201cGreat read,\u201d according to Evidential Spirit Medium Sandra O\u2019Hara. \u201cStrong characters, bad guys and ghosts with a killer twist.\u201d NY Times bestselling authors have lauded the work, which is Loyd\u2019s first fiction book, but surely not his last. \u201cThe late Martin Caidin, author of \u2018Cyborg,\u2019 the basis of \u2018The Six Million Dollar Man,\u2019 urged me to get into fiction,\u201d Auerbach recalled. \u201cBoth before and after he died. \u201cNear Death\u201d is based on an original screenplay the trio wrote in 1992 called \u201cRaney & Daye: Supernormal Sleuths.\u201d Before that, it was a television series pitch called \u201cPsi Cops.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was before \u2018The X-Files,\u2019\u201d Arnold recalls. \u201cNobody was ready for a paranormal television show \u2013 and a few people thought it was about fraternity police, so we decided to change the title.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rich began the task of updating the trio\u2019s almost 30-year-old work a year ago. \u201cThe process of turning a movie into a novel has always intrigued me. I\u2019ve enjoyed movies based on novels, but the other way opens up exploration into character that you can\u2019t do in a screenplay,\u201d Hosek said. \u201cI began writing novels recently, and Raney and Daye came to mind because of all of Nate and Jennifer\u2019s untold stories. But it wasn\u2019t something I wanted to do without Arnold and Loyd. I reached out to see if they would be interested in this project, and they both responded, \u2018When do we start?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Loyd recently completed the team effort \u201cESP Wars: East & West\u201d and has written numerous books on the paranormal, including the definitive \u201cESP, Hauntings and Poltergeists: A Parapsychologist\u2019s Handbook.\u201d Rich has also written \u201cThe Dead Kids Club,\u201d which will be released in 2021.
