Onek, seen here with education representatives from Palabek, focuses much of his building lightning safe communities efforts in the scientific aspects of disaster preparedness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy Ministry is working with ACLENet on the scientific aspects of disaster preparedness,\u201d said Hilary Onek, the Hon Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees. \u201cIt is the hope of parties involved in this partnership to make this optimism a reality,\u201d Onek explained during a Public Service Announcement (PSA), an integral part of engagements leading to the signing of the MoU that was broadcast during the 2021 holiday season in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aj4iifLdI7E\">English<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=v-UfxvG90Ng\">Luganda<\/a>, the primary indigenous language in Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>The MoU is an important milestone for ACLENet, as it is expected to provide instrumental framework for: 1) A national mandate to plan, promote, and advocate for lightning safety across Uganda; 2) Introduction of scientific principles of lightning safety for people, property, and places according to globally recognized lightning protection system (LPS) safety standard provisions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iec.ch\/homepage\">International Electrotechnical Commission<\/a> (IEC).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis partnership is expected to further ACLENet\u2019s goals of saving lives and property across Africa,\u201d said Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, Managing Director of ACLENet.<\/p>\n<p>Data sets and information packages are being prepared for the Hon. Minister for onward submission to appropriate units within the Government of Uganda and general public and include priorities outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.undrr.org\/publication\/sendai-framework-disaster-risk-reduction-2015-2030\">The United Nation\u2019s Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030<\/a> as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/aclenet.org\/news-publications\/country-news\/\">database on lightning injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpecifically, ACLENet plans to expand the work piloted with programs and interventions over the last seven years and in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.necoc.opm.go.ug\/\">National Emergency Coordination and Operations Centre<\/a> (NECOC), a specialized department of MoRDP&amp;R,\u201d explained Dr. Cooper. \u201cTogether, we aim to advance the \u2018building lightning safe communities\u2019 effort by reducing the number of deaths, injuries, and property damage from lightning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here in the U.S., the International Code Council (I.C.C.) is celebrating its 42nd annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iccsafe.org\/content\/building-safety-month-2022-safety-for-all-codes-in-action\/\">Building Safety Month<\/a> campaign with the theme \u201cSafety for All: Building Codes in Action,\u201d to raise awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring safety in spaces in which we live work and learn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding Safety Month focuses on issues that impact our everyday lives: building safety, energy, water and disasters\u2014factors of constant concern for homes, schools, businesses and communities,\u201d said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more: <a href=\"https:\/\/aclenet.org\/how-to-help\/overview.html\">https:\/\/aclenet.org\/how-to-help\/overview.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>About ACLENet:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ACLENet, a nonprofit organization incorporated in both the US and Uganda, seeks funding and volunteers to help reduce injuries, save lives, and decrease crippling infrastructure damage from lightning in Africa.
