San Francisco, CA -- (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE via PRNetwire) -- August 9, 2002 -- Some of the world's leading researchers and entrepreneurs in neural prostheses, neurostimulation, and advanced brain sensing will participate in the second annual Neurotech Leaders Forum, to be held in San Francisco October 3, 2002. The full-day event offers an opportunity for researchers and executives in the neurotechnology field to interact with venture capital firms and other funding organizations.

Included in the event's agenda are presentations from leading-edge firms developing devices to restore hearing to deaf people, vision to blind people, and muscular control to people suffering from stroke, spinal cord injury, and other neurological diseases and disorders.

Executives from several start-ups and venture capital firms active in the neuro space will be speaking at the event. Peter Baillie, CEO of Epic Biosonics Inc. in Victoria, B.C., will describe his firm's efforts developing the first fully implantable cochlear prosthesis. Another panelist is Robert Greenberg, M.D., Ph.D., CEO of Second Sight LLC in Valencia, CA, which is developing a retinal implant to treat blindness. On the venture capital panel, Roger Quy, Ph.D., a partner with Technology Partners of Palo Alto, CA, Heath Lukatch, Ph.D., a partner with US Bancorp. Piper Jaffrey in Menlo Park, CA, and Daniel O'Connell with Neuro Ventures Capital in Charlottsville, VA will participate.

Keynote speaker at this year's event will be Dr. Warren Grill, one of the nation's leading experts in neural stimulation, neural prostheses, and neural control. Dr. Grill is the Elmer L. Lindseth Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University and a principal investigator at the Cleveland FES Center.

Other speakers at the Forum include Ann Bunnenberg, Ph.D, president of Electrical Geodesics, Inc. in Portland, OR, and Arthur Prochazka, Ph.D., founder of Neurokinetics, Inc., in Edmonton, AB.

Session topics include partnering opportunities with bio/pharma firms, distribution and marketing issues, the reimbursement outlook for stimulation devices, and developing supportive clinician communities.

James Cavuoto, editor and publisher of Neurotech Business Report, will serve as moderator for the roundtable discussions.

This year's event will take place at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport. Attendees can save $100 off the $695 registration fee if they reserve their place before September 1, 2002.
