Testing Proves UV Effective at Killing SARS Virus
NEW YORK, NY - Aug. 6, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- A new laboratory study
has demonstrated that Ultra Violet (UV) light can effectively kill the Severe
Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus. FP Technologies
(www.vigilairsystems.com), an engineering firm that uses UV radiation to
sterilize air and surfaces, designed the SARS testing. Tests were performed
at ZeptoMetrix, Inc., a leading bio-tech lab that currently holds several
contracts with the Centers for Disease Control.
In this first round of testing, FP Technologies confirmed that SARS is killed
following exposure to brief intense UV radiation. Worldwide this is the first
known laboratory evidence proving UVs efficacy against SARS.
FP Technologies' President, Peter Bjorkman, says more testing is underway.
"Now that we have verified that UV kills SARS, we need to determine specific
exposure times and intensities so that we can effectively implement this
technology and protect people worldwide."
In 2003, SARS infected 8,098 people according to the Center for Disease
Control. 744 of those who were infected by the virus died. Another outbreak
of SARS was reported in China in April of 2004, infecting 9 people and killing
FP Technologies designs and installs VIGILAIR systems for the Healthcare,
Bio-Defense and Commercial Real Estate business sectors. VIGILAIR
combines Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI), filtration and reflective
materials to purify air as it passes through the Heating, Ventilation and Air
Conditioning (HVAC) system inside a building.
Previously FP Technologies has tested and proven the effectiveness of UVGI
against Bacillus anthracis spores (anthrax) E. coli O157:H7 and salmonella.
Currently, VIGILAIR systems protect hospitals, key government buildings
and financial institutions.
