WASHINGTON, D.C. – Mar. 15 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — The Georgetown Public Policy Institute is hosting its 13th Annual Conference, entitled Securing Our Nation’s Future, this Friday, March 23, in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, D.C. The conference will examine multiple dimensions of national security including the growing threat of terrorism, the nation’s long-term fiscal future and the innovative health care reforms taking place across the country.

With the importance of national security and continued public concern over the nation’s stability, this conference presents an opportunity for top public officials and policy researchers to offer their insight on America’s future.

Public interest in expanding health insurance coverage is rising and 2008 presidential candidates are taking notice. Massachusetts’s Commissioner of Health Care Finance and Policy, Amy Lischko, will be on hand to discuss the Commonwealth’s unique approach to health care reform, which includes plans to ensure all of its states residents. Joining her are Susan Dentzer, award-winning health correspondent on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and Stephen Zuckerman, Principal Research Associate, Health Policy Center of the Urban Institute.

If terrorism threatens American security from outside our borders, financial insolvency threatens American security from within. Participating in a panel focusing on long-term financial security are Comptroller General of the United States, David M. Walker and former Vice-Chair of the Federal Reserve and founding director of the Congressional Budget Office, Alice Rivlin. Joining Walker and Rivlin are Stuart Butler, Vice President of Economic Policy and the Heritage Foundation, and Maya MacGuineas, Director of the Fiscal Policy Program at the New America Foundation. These panelists are also participants in the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour, a series of public forums organized by the Concord Coalition.

In addition, the Director of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. James L. Campbell will be on hand to share his insights on the military’s role in combating terrorism. Lt. Gen. Campbell offers over twenty years of exemplary military service and expertise to the panel on securing our nation in an age of terrorism. ]

Also participating on the terrorism panel are James Carafano, Senior Research Fellow for Foreign Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation, and Neal Pollard, Georgetown Professor and former Vice President of Hicks and Associates, a leading homeland security consulting firm.

Other prominent panelists include Andrew Natsios, former Administrator, US Agency for International Development; E.J. Dionne, columnist Washington Post; Clark Ervin, Director of the Homeland Security Program at the Aspen Institute; Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies; Mark Shields, political analyst, PBS’s NewsHour; and Lew Watts, President and CEO of PFC Energy.
