Nonetheless, thousands of regular folk eagerly call themselves members of ZAP -- Zinfandel Advocates and Producers. ZAP members plan festivals, educational events and tastings featuring the robust red grape, all in hopes of educating the public about the virtues of Zinfandel. ZAP produces the West's largest wine tasting every January in San Francisco. On Thursday, April 24, Zinfandel fans travel east to Washington, DC with nearly 70 California wine producers to host "Zin in the City," an educational wine tasting open to the public. Winemakers will pour more than 120 Zins and hope to discuss their wines and the mysteries of "America's Heritage Grape" with potential converts. "Zinfandel has stirred the souls of its fans, a dressed-down group of self-described anti-snobs, unpretentious in demeanor but relentless in their determination to promote Zinfandel as America's grape," said Amy Shipley, writing in the Washington Post. The event takes place at Marriott Metro Center, 775 12th Street NW from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wine producers plan to demonstrate the regional characteristics of Zinfandel and explain the wine's association with the Wild West, the Gold Rush and rugged individualists. Tickets are $40 each or $30 for ZAP members. ZAP membership is open to everyone and costs $30 per year for two people. More information can be found at the organization's website, zinfandel.org, or by calling 530 274-4900. Similar events are scheduled for Boston on April 29 and New York City on May 1.
