FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LULAC CALLS UPON CALIFORNIA VOTERS TO OPPOSE PROP 54 California Latinos Are Urged To Vote On Tuesday To Defeat The Information Ban SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. - (Send2Press Newswire) - October 6, 2003 -- The National Board of the League of United Latin American Citizens voted today to urge all Latino registered voters in California to go to the polls on Tuesday, October 7, 2003 and vote against Proposition 54 - the Racial Privacy Initiative. Proposition 54 seeks to amend the California Constitution to prohibit the state and other public bodies - including local governments, colleges and universities - from classifying individuals and collecting information on them by race, ethnicity, color or national origin. This initiative would undermine equal education, public health and civil rights protections for Latinos and other minorities. "Proposition 54 is a cynical attempt to undermine civil rights in California," stated Hector Flores, LULAC National President. "The Proposition condones and encourages racial discrimination by preventing the California government from collecting data that could document racial disparities in the state." The proposition would prevent law enforcement from tracking racial profiling and prosecuting hate crimes. Gaps in scholastic achievement between racial and ethnic groups would be unknown and go un-addressed. Health care providers could not track and treat diseases as effectively. "California is not a colorblind utopia and we cannot bury our head in the sand and allow discrimination to go unchecked," stated Flores. "I call on all Californians to reject this divisive initiative and to begin addressing the disparities that this initiative is attempting to hide." California LULAC State Director, Ms. Mickie Luna stated, "California LULAC appreciates the support by the National President and the National LULAC Board in opposing Proposition 54."
