FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE LULAC Has Grave Concerns about Schwarzenegger LULAC Questions Schwarzenegger's Ability to Represent Latinos and Women WASHINGTON, DC - (Send2Press Newswire) - October 7, 2003 -- The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is concerned about Arnold Schwarzenegger's ability to represent all Californians. More specifically Schwarzenegger has recently made it apparent that he would not make a good representative for Latinos and women in California. "It is becoming increasing clear that Schwarzenegger does not have the ability to lead California because he seems to lack concern for some of the largest constituent groups in the state -- Latinos and women," said LULAC National President Hector Flores. "The fact that he sits on the board of U.S. ENGLISH; hired Pete Wilson, the former governor who is known for his anti-immigrant views; supported Proposition 187; and opposes driver's licenses for immigrants exemplifies his lack of commitment to Latinos and other immigrants. Schwarzenegger is clearly out of touch with Latinos which is call for much concern especially because the Census Bureau's data show that Latinos make up about 32.4 percent of California s population," added Flores. "Now to make matters worse we learn that Mr. Schwarzenegger has a reputation of disrespecting women. How can we possibly have him lead our state?" asked Vera Marquez, LULAC National Vice President for Women. "Schwarzenegger's actions stand in stark contrast to LULAC s national platform to prevent the exploitation of women," added Marquez. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization in the United States. LULAC advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, health, and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating at more than 700 LULAC councils nationwide.
