FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE California LULAC Calls On New Governor To Meet With California Latino Community Latino Population Projected to be over 30% by 2005 HOLLISTER, Calif. - (Send2Press Newswire) - Oct. 8, 2003 -- The California League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced today that a community outreach initiative for the new administration will be developed and adopted at the upcoming State Board Meeting in November. "This is not politics as usual," stated California State Director, Ms. Mickie Luna. "The results of yesterday's election, clearly reflects the dissatisfaction among Californians, especially Latinos. Although there are 4 million more registered Democrats than Republicans in California, the two Republican candidates received 60.9% of the vote among Californian voters. And, Latino voters surprised everybody. Most political observers thought that Latinos would side with Davis after the incumbent governor signed into law late last week a measure that would allow people in the United States illegally to acquire California driver's licenses. However, the recall measure was supported by 47 percent of Latino voters and opposed by 49 percent of Latino voters. Ms. Luna noted, "Last night Arnold Schwarzenegger stated: 'I want to reach out to all nationalities, all races, all colors. I want to be the governor of the people.' The new Governor must reach out to the Latino community and make good on his word that he will be the governor of the people." By 2005, it is projected that more than a third of all Californians will be Latino. Ms. Luna added, "Mr. Schwarzenegger has an opportunity here -- not only of having won the governor s race, but that of garnering 30% of Latino support in California. Only time will tell what he does with this."
