DALLAS, Texas, Jan. 3, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- On December 28, 2011, President Obama issued a proclamation designating January 2012 as National Mentoring Month. He stated: "Every day, mentors help young Americans face the challenges of growing into adulthood. By setting a positive example and sharing their time, knowledge, and experience, mentors play an essential role in preparing our Nation's youth for a bright future." Themed "Invest in the Future: Mentor a Child," January 2012 marks the eleventh annual National Mentoring Month, a time each year when the President spotlights the importance of mentors and the need for every child to have the guidance of a caring adult.

Without positive role models, teen girls often face a "crisis of confidence" and are especially vulnerable to risky behavior and making bad choices with devastating lifelong consequences. With this in mind and focused on empowering all girls and young women, ages six to 18, Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas is launching a new mentoring program that helps adult women connect with girls and provide them with ongoing support and encouragement.

"There are no special skills required to take advantage of the opportunity to mentor, only the willingness to help," said Leanne Hall, Volunteer Resource Director at Girls Inc. of Metropolitan Dallas. "Mentors must pass a background check, be at least 21 years old and be dependable and consistent meeting time commitments of five hours per month. Selected women are carefully screened and then matched with our girls. The mentors will have the opportunity to encourage and support young girls through helping with homework, test preparation and providing guidance and friendship."

Sign up Now!
Mentor training kicks off on January 17, 2012. To participate in the program, or to learn more about this or other volunteer opportunities, please contact Leanne Hall at 214-654-4506 or lhall@girlsincdallas.org .
BETHLEHEM, Pa., Dec. 21, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Sher Fertility Institute announced today that Joel and Mary Roberts of Slatington, PA would be receiving free In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments as the winners of a contest that the company offered this month. The donation is part of Sher Fertility Institute's "Giving Back" initiative, intended to help some of the estimated 1 million couples in the U.S. that need advanced fertility treatment, but aren't able to afford it. The donated treatment is valued at $10,000.

The contest was open to anyone who needed IVF treatment in order to conceive and required entrants to tell their story detailing why they deserved to win the treatment. Almost 100 couples submitted entries, which were reviewed by a panel of clinical and administrative staff at Sher Fertility Institute. The panel selected 10 finalists, whose stories were then posted on the company's Facebook Page and website, where visitors could vote for their choice.

Sher Fertility Institute had originally planned to donate IVF treatment to just one couple, but decided to open the donation up to three couples instead.

"The stories that came in were heart-wrenching and inspiring," said Sher Fertility Institute Lehigh Valley Medical Director Dr. Albert Peters. "Every one of these couples was deserving of the donated treatment, so in the end, we felt that offering it to three couples was the right thing to do."

Joel and Mary have been struggling to have a baby for several years and have undergone several unsuccessful treatments, but weren't able to find the financial resources for In Vitro Fertilization, which their doctor told them was their best option for conceiving. IVF treatment typically costs $10,000-$15,000.

"We are so grateful for this opportunity and will always remember this day," said Mary. "We have been through a heartbreaking 3 years of trying to conceive, paid thousands of dollars trying to get pregnant, and now we finally feel like there is hope."

Their story, along with those of the other finalists are posted on the Sher Fertility Institute website: www.haveababy.com/news-menu/269 . Mary has also been an active voice in the infertility community and chronicles her journey on her blog.

She recently created a video, "Mary's Journey": http://animoto.com/play/kYpCrQf29N4TS0SpHiF5wA .

During the last three decades, Sher Fertility Institutes and their doctors have donated hundreds of free fertility treatments to patients and couples from all over the country.
WASHINGTON, D.C., Dec. 9, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Gingrich Foundation is proud to honor the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation as its December Charity of the Month. Toys for Tots distributes millions of gifts each Christmas to brighten the holidays of our nation's less fortunate children.

Colonel William L. Hendricks, USMCR, founded Toys for Tots as a pilot program in 1947. The Marine Corps expanded his project just one year later into a national effort and called upon Marine Corps Reserve units to conduct Toys for Tots campaigns in their local communities.

Six decades later, Toys for Tots continues to thrive. Today, the program reaches all 50 states, and invites communities without a reserve unit to conduct approved Toys for Tots campaigns.

"We are very pleased the Gingrich Foundation has decided to name the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation as their Charity for the Month of December," said retired Marine Major Bill Grein, Vice President of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. "With this additional exposure we will reach many civic-minded people who share our interest in helping fulfill the Christmas holiday dreams of our nation's neediest children; children who might otherwise be overlooked this year."

"Toys for Tots is a wonderful American tradition," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "Newt and I are honored to support an organization that helps raise the spirits and hopes of those in need at Christmas."

To date, Toys for Tots has distributed more than 450 million toys to more than 200 million children -- an extraordinary accomplishment.

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.
ROCHESTER, N.Y., Dec. 2, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- An epic one-day giving event, ROC the Day, will take place on December 8, 2011. ROC the Day will be the first of its kind in the greater Rochester area and all of New York State. On this day, thousands of community members can help support Children Awaiting Parents through 24 hours of online, unprecedented giving.

Donations can be made on December 8 from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. by visiting http://www.roctheday.org/agency/ChildrenAwaitingParents .

Every hour throughout ROC the Day, one ROCstar donor will be chosen to receive an additional $500 added to their gift for the not-for-profit of their choice. Community members can enter their email address at ROCtheDay.org to sign up for a reminder to give and become a ROCstar on December 8.

Children Awaiting Parents is also asking supporters to submit a photo of themselves when they were 8, the average age of a child in care looking for their forever family. Photos are being uploaded onto their Facebook page. www.Facebook.com/ChildrenAwaitingParents .

Communities across the United States have hosted similar one-day online giving events in the past several years, many of which achieved millions of dollars raised for local not-for-profits. Dave Fiedler, 2012 United Way Board Chair and President and CEO of sponsor ESL Federal Credit Union, said that the goals of this event are to raise money for all local nonprofits and help community members make a difference in a simple way. "The end-of-year holiday season can be very busy," Fiedler said, "but it's a time to give thanks for what we have in this community and remind ourselves that we can always do more to help others. Giving to ROC the Day is the perfect way to do that."

ROC the Day is powered by United Way of Greater Rochester with sponsorship support from ESL Federal Credit Union. Additional ROC the Day community partners include Ad Council of Rochester, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Genesee Valley Chapter, City of Rochester, Council of Agency Executives, County of Monroe, The Farash Foundation, Greater Rochester Health Foundation, The Jewish Federation, RocCity Coalition and Rochester Area Community Foundation.
ATLANTA, Ga., Nov. 8, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Protecting Kids LLC, a Georgia-based publishing company for mental health professionals, today announced the launch of the book titled "Avoiding Sexual Dangers: A Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Child" (ISBN: 978-1463772819).

With cases like that of Coach Jerry Sandusky in the news, parents are left wondering how to protect their children. If parents can't trust their son's football coach, who can they trust?

Psychologists and sexual abuse experts, Dr. Medlin and Dr. Knauts, have written a book to help parents answer this very question. They draw upon their 30 years of experience in working with sex offenders and sexually abused children. The book helps parents understand how sexual abusers select and "groom" children, thereby setting the stage to molest them.

The book also helps parents:
1) Spot potential sexual abusers;
2) Avoid high-risk situations where their child is at increased risk of sexual abuse;
3) Educate their child about sexual abuse so their child will know how to respond if someone tries to molest them;
4) Recognize the signs their child may have been sexually abused;
5) Take steps to protect their child from sexual abusers, both online and in the community.

This book has received positive reviews from both parents and professionals. According to Dr. Kimberley Bond, Program Director at Twin Cedars Youth and Family Services, "'Avoiding Sexual Dangers' is an excellent resource for parents and professionals."

Steve Stoller, father of a 7-year-old girl wrote, "Reading this book was one of the most important things I have done for my child's well being... Packed with tips and web resources, the book tells you how to protect [your children] from hidden dangers at daycare, at school and with sitters and even helps you safely navigate the internet, cell phones and social networking sites."

Sheri Hardin, mother and licensed clinical social worker, wrote: "This book is a must-have for both parents and therapists."

Avoiding Sexual Dangers is available at www.avoidingsexualdangers.com or Amazon.com. Dr. Medlin and Dr. Knauts are available for interviews.
LOS ANGELES, Calif., Nov. 1, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Inventive Minds continues to add useful and inspirational media products to its line of tools for inventions. Most recently, it has created and released "A Workbook For Young Inventors" (ISBN: 978-0983344803). This workbook for kids incorporates colorful characters known as the "Dreamalings®" that are used to educate and motivate children to imagine and create, and ultimately - invent.

The Dreamalings® travel with the child on their journey every step of the way. They propose organizational and structural tips to help the child to structure their thoughts in a manner that will help them to execute their ideas.

The purpose of the workbook is two-fold: to stimulate imagination; and to serve as a teaching tool for documenting projects and inventions that may contribute to historic and positive change.

"Our mission is to work with inventors, organizations and schools around the world," says Alina Mirzaian, founder of Inventive Minds. "We all have a certain genius inside of us and my desire is to help people to tap into that creative power and guide them on how to invent."

This new workbook is designed for children aged 7 to 12 and is 32 pages in length. It is full color and introduces the purpose that an invention serves. It includes workbook rules and guidelines; numbered entry and grid pages; colorful characters with inspirational quotes; cool facts related to historical inventions; and a history of Thomas Edison and his inventions.

A digital download version is available for $7.95; a softcover/paperback edition (ISBN-13: 978-0983344803) is available for $13.99. Both may be accessed here: http://www.inventivemindsjournal.com/workbook/ . Also available on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/dp/0983344809/ .

About Inventive Minds:
Inventive Minds was founded by Alina Mirzaian while she was in her second-year of graduate school pursuing her MBA. She had worked on a marketing plan for an invention idea and was quickly inspired by her professor to take it to the next level. Now, as a patent-pending inventor and while attending law school, she has first-hand knowledge of the importance of an inventor's journal.

Today, Inventive Minds is a media development company that is committed to creating high quality, user-friendly inventor's journals that are designed to assist young, teen and adult inventors in maintaining and documenting their ideas for inventions.

Future plans include translation into French, Italian and Spanish.

This is all made possible through a hand-selected team of successful individuals who are part of a highly-creative and talented advisory committee.
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Oct. 4, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- What do teens think about cheating? How do youth approach depression or becoming vegetarian? How do traditional religious backgrounds influence young people's choices and character development? These questions and more are tackled by teens in the pages of KidSpirit's new print issue released today, the Best of KidSpirit Online.

The compilation features articles, poetry, and art created by teens and published since KidSpirit Magazine went to the Web. The content was selected by KidSpirit's all-youth Editorial Board from issues on Competition & Achievement, Rituals & Traditions, The Body in Balance, Finding Your Spirit in Art, and The Question of Meaning.

From this impressive body of work, 18 pieces have been further selected for a KidSpirit Award by the Editorial Board, honoring the most reflective, thought-provoking and creative work on the Web. An article by Peter Benson, President and CEO of Search Institute, was singled out for the KidSpirit PerSpectives Award, the only award given to an adult contributor. In the article, Benson urges youth to find their inner "spark" - an activity that inspires joy or passion-and shows their mentors how to nurture it.

The contributions from talented young people also make the Best of KidSpirit Online an exciting teaching tool. Because articles are written and edited by their peers, KidSpirit's content engages young readers by putting them into dialogue with one another. In addition, KidSpirit's themes invite reflection on big ideas from many points of view. As the youth-led Editorial Board remarks in its mission statement, "We want to help the young people of the world show their colors and share each other's cultures, art, beliefs, ethics and values. Our goal is to encourage varied perspectives and contribute to greater mutual understanding in our lives and our world."

The Best of KidSpirit Online provides educators and mentors with group discussion guides, as well as activities to help get students involved in talking about life's big questions. KidSpirit also invites teachers and youth workers to contact the magazine, in order to submit contributions by their own talented teens.
WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 8, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In Recognition of International Literacy Day, the Gingrich Foundation has recognized Reading Is Fundamental as its September Charity of the Month. For nearly 45 years, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has provided books to children to foster a love of reading and develop skills that are critical to learning.

To date, RIF has given away more than 380 million books to children. Last year alone, through its Books for Ownership Program, RIF provided 15 million new books to 4 million children in all 50 states.

"RIF is committed to continuing its legacy of providing books to the millions of under served children in this country," said Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO of RIF. "Studies show that having access to books has positive behavioral, educational, and psychological outcomes for children, and we will continue our efforts to inspire more children to become lifelong readers."

"As American students return back to school, Reading Is Fundamental provides an opportunity for millions of children to discover the joys of reading," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "With memories of this program from my childhood, I am pleased we can support RIF's important work."

As the nation's largest children's literacy nonprofit, RIF programs reach children in a variety of settings including schools, community centers, homeless shelters, and hospitals. RIF inspires children to read by giving them the power to choose books based on their own interests.

Through a network of 400,000 volunteers, RIF motivates and encourages children and families to discover the joy of reading.
