MANORVILLE, N.Y., Jan. 31, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Officer James Greco, a 17-year veteran of the Nassau County Department of Corrections, has been denied his retirement status by the Sheriff of Nassau County. Officer Greco was charged with Workers Compensation fraud which resulted in his wrongful termination, as per a ruling by the arbitrator hearing his case. Despite winning two judicial decrees in his favor against the Nassau County Sheriff's Department, Officer Greco continues to be denied his full retirement status.

In early 2011, a Workers Compensation Judge found Officer James Greco innocent of the erroneous charges by Nassau County that he was defrauding the Workers Compensation system. Subsequently, his termination as a Senior Corrections Officer in the Nassau County Sheriff's Department was overturned by an arbitrator. It was concluded that Officer Greco be awarded a three-quarters disability retirement from the New York State retirement system, in addition to retroactive back pay.

HISTORY:

Officer Greco had suffered a career-ending injury due to an assault in 2007 by an inmate. Initially the Sheriff's Department's own doctor deemed him injured and placed him on light duty status. Unfaltering, the Sheriff's Department returned Greco to full duty post anyway, entirely aware that his performance would be less than capable. If Officer Greco had accepted this subjective and irrational decision, his safety and the safety of his fellow officers would be at risk.

After Greco refused to recognize the Department's ploy to place him at a full duty post, he was suspended twice: once for a week; then again for two weeks; and was then ultimately terminated. After termination, Greco struggled to keep his house, where he lives with his wife and two young daughters. Pursuant to an arbitrator's ruling, it was legally documented that the Sheriff's Department did not adhere to its own policies and procedures, and that Greco was indeed, wrongfully terminated. Officer Greco should have been reinstated at his original title, but the Sheriff's Department refused to do so, violating the arbitrator's ruling that was two years in the making. Throughout this time, the Nassau County Sheriff's Department recklessly squandered thousands of tax payer's dollars for needless legal fees.

Greco himself, spent tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees for almost four years, while attempting to prove his innocence. The family also faced losing their home several times however, at no time did Officer Greco accept any disbursement or settlement through the Worker's Compensation Fund, other than for medical treatment. A neurologist's diagnosis of Officer Greco's injuries concluded that if another assault on him took place, the consequences could leave him a paraplegic.

While on active duty at the Nassau County Correctional Facility, Officer Greco became a staunch safety advocate for his fellow corrections officers and inmates alike. After discovering a proliferating and hazardous mold infestation in the correction facility, he promptly reported it to the Department. When no admission or action was taken by the Department, he reported it to OSHA. Following OSHA's investigation and confirmation of the massive mold infestation, the Nassau County Sheriff's Department began to retaliate against Greco by way of discrimination and consistent persecution.

According to the Sheriff Officers Association Union Acting President, Brian Sullivan, this is not the only case where a corrections officer has been terminated and unjustifiably denied retirement status. According to Sullivan, other officers had also been advised by Union officials that nothing could be done about the Department's prejudicial practices, which are common daily occurrences at the facility, and commented that the Sheriff's Department "does what it wants."

A female corrections officer at the same location was injured on the job in 2001. She was subsequently fired in 2004, but was legally awarded three-quarters retirement pay by New York State. To this day, she is still battling the "system" trying to receive her retirement status from the department. Brian Sullivan went on to say that Nassau County's legal counsel for the Nassau County Correctional Center, Elizabeth Loconsolo, stated to him that "a retired Sheriff's identification card is a badge of honor and that Officer Greco is not worthy of it." Current Sheriff Sposato also commented to Sullivan that, "if Greco wants an I.D, tell him to come back to work."

Officer Greco is adamant about not surrendering to defeat by an institution that governs itself and does not adhere to New York State legal decrees. He is determined to set a precedent, whatever it takes, so that future officers will not have to succumb to this unacceptable, bullying treatment.

Given the financial gaffe that Nassau County is presently in, does the Sheriff's Department have carte blanche to frivolously spend tax payer's money for attorney and court fees simply to feed their ego when losing a legal judgment? It is obvious that we have a corrupt and anarchistic regime operating clandestinely behind the walls of this correctional facility. Officer Greco is now returning to the front line yet one more time, to rightfully attain his retirement status.

Media coverage regarding the questionable behavior within the Nassau County Sheriff's Department has been an ongoing endeavor by The New York Times and Newsday; however, it has been an effort in futility.
PETERSBURG, Va., Jan. 30, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Most Americans don't consider prisons when lamenting scholarship reductions at their local college or higher taxes on gas when filling up at the pump. Maybe they should. According to Christopher Zoukis, author of the forthcoming "Education Behind Bars" (ISBN: 978-1934597774; Sunbury Press, December 2011), upwards of $60 billion a year can be saved simply by educating prisoners.

According to the Journal of Correctional Education, the U.S. incarcerates over 2.3 million persons, a number equal to 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's incarcerated population. Each of these 2.3 million prisoners costs American taxpayers $32,000 to $40,000 each year for food and housing. Of those 2.3 million, around 800,000 will be released each year and most, that is 70% to 85%, will return to prison within 5 years of release. The exception is prisoners who receive an education while in prison.

According to the Journal of Correctional Education, of prisoners with an AA degree, only 13.7% will return to prison, of those with a Bachelor's degree 5.6%, and those with a Master's degree 0%. The Institute for Higher Education Policy calculates the cost of educating one prisoner to be $2,000 to $3,782 per year, much lower than the $40,000 per year outlay for incarceration.

While educating prisoners is an odd concept to champion, the fact that the U.S. spends $30.1 billion each year to build more prisons should give all Americans pause. This is money siphoned off from local community colleges, state universities, defense, and much needed public work projects, not to mention every American's wallet.

With the January 2012 publication of "Education Behind Bars," a comprehensive resource delineating the financial and social benefits of educating prisoners will finally be available.
FARMINGTON, N.M., April 6 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In view of the snow-capped San Juans to the north, with the iconic Shiprock floating on the skyline to the west, Farmington is a rugged oil boom town rapidly emerging as a destination for outdoor adventurers. "Our climate, rivers and wilderness areas make outdoor activities a major attraction for visitors," says Debbie Dusenbery, director of the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The dry and temperate high-altitude climate permits year-round fishing, four wheeling, golfing, hiking and biking through a spectacular landscape of canyons, mesas, and unusual hoodoos formations.

Dusenbery adds: "Farmington is known as a sporting playground. In recent years, we have begun to host sizeable outdoor events like The Four Corners Xterra Triathlon coming up in June."

Farmington lies in the heart of the Four Corners near the spot where Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado meet. Three rivers, the Animas, the La Plata and the San Juan merge in its town center.
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif., Feb. 25 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Through government and business partnerships in San Bernardino County, training programs are helping reduce the number of people on welfare, develop their skills and stimulate businesses growth in spite of a tough economy. The County of San Bernardino Board of Supervisors knows that assisting businesses during these tough times is the key to our local economic recovery and uses funding received through the Workforce Investment Act to provide this assistance.

J & R Fleet Services is a family-owned truck repair center based in Bloomington. The business had experienced steady growth since opening in 1998, but the economic slowdown of the last few years made it difficult to hire additional employees, especially trained workers.

"We begin working on our clients' repairs within 30 minutes of arrival and no appointment is required," explained Javier Rodriguez, one of the three brothers who owns and manages J & R Fleet Services. "In order to continue these quick turnaround times that we and our customers expect, we have to maintain enough staff to deliver on our promise of unsurpassed customer service."

Six employees were hired last month into entry-level positions with J & R Fleet Services through Federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) dollars administered locally by the Workforce Investment Board of San Bernardino County. These federal dollars reimburse employers for the wages paid during a pre-determined training period. In this case, all six employees had been receiving government assistance prior to being hired.

"Nearly 1,000 residents of San Bernardino County have been placed in jobs through federally funded on-the-job training programs reducing government assistance while promoting self-reliance, economic sustainability and self-pride," said Chair Josie Gonzales, San Bernardino County Fifth District Supervisor. "This is just one of the many ways that federal Workforce Investment Act funding is impacting the lives of our county's residents."

"We're a small business and the On-the-Job Training program made it possible for us to hire nearly ten percent of our workforce, train them in entry-level positions and develop their skills at our company," Rodriguez said. "We hired all of them into full-time positions and the work ethic and dedication they demonstrated has helped them quickly move up the ranks and earn promotions."

To qualify for this program, participants must have been receiving government assistance. On-the-Job Training offers a way off the government's payroll and a chance to develop marketable job skills that make participants a competitive member of the workforce.

"Taking into account the dollars spent to train versus recovery of these funds through federal wage withholding, we average a strong return on investment in less than one year," said Sandy Harmsen, Executive Director of the Workforce Investment Board. "People get back to work with new skills, are removed from federally-subsidized assistance programs and return as proud and productive members of the community."

This program allows employers to grow in a difficult economy by obtaining temporary training subsidies. In these ways, federal funding is working successfully to create more job opportunities for our local workforce.

"The benefits from participating in this program are numerous," Rodriguez said. "We now have six dedicated new members in the J & R Fleet Services family, and we know that our company has helped to improve their lives. It would not have been possible without the federally-funded WIA program."
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif., Feb. 8 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Edward Professional Advisors announces that the City of Compton has selected it to help create its own police department. The Mayor of the City of Compton says, "We are excited about the opportunity to regain local control of our police services. We are in the midst of a campaign to rebirth a new Compton. Having our own police department is part of the overall strategic plan to make Compton a better place to live and work."

Dr. Paul Edward, founder of Edward Professional Advisors, says, "The Sheriff's Department has done a great job during the past ten years in Compton, but research clearly shows that cities with strong community-based police departments are better places to live and work. The police-community relationship is crucial for quality law enforcement and we are excited to be working on this historic project."

The opponents of Compton's transition to local control of their police services say Compton will not be able to afford the costs that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department currently spends on the police services they provide for Compton.

Compton's City Manager, Willie Norfleet, says, "Not only will we gain local control of our police services, but our efforts will cost the citizens of Compton less while providing top quality police services."

"As one of the few African American owned consulting firms, it is an honor to be helping Compton improve its police services. Compton is a place of great importance to the African American community and it feels wonderful to be collaborating with the citizens of Compton to improve their safety and quality of life," says Dr. Edward.

Compton's successful transition to locally controlled police services will not only be significant for this African American community but will serve at the blueprint for other communities around the world.
ATLANTA, Ga., Nov. 19 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Georgia Humanities Council and the Digital Library of Georgia won the Helen and Martin Schwartz Prize for their partnership on the Civil Rights Digital Library (CRDL). This marks the second time the Georgia Humanities Council has won the Schwartz Prize. Their first prize recognized their success with the online New Georgia Encyclopedia.

The Federation of State Humanities Councils offers the Helen and Martin Schwartz Prize to recognize outstanding work in the public humanities that is supported or conducted by state humanities councils. The CRDL (civilrightslibrary.org) was selected for its unique contribution to the humanities and for its impact on the region and on the state of Georgia.

The CRDL offers a digital video archive of historical news footage, a portal connecting users to civil rights movement content from libraries worldwide, and instructional materials for educators to use in the classroom. The Georgia Humanities Council, via the New Georgia Encyclopedia, developed original articles to supplement the news footage and provide historical context for the movement in Georgia.

Federation president Esther Mackintosh congratulated the Georgia Humanities Council and the Digital Library of Georgia noting, "With this as with so many of its other outstanding projects, the Georgia Humanities Council has forged creative partnerships and drawn on the newest and most sophisticated technological tools to provide the public with a deeper understanding of and greater access to a critical chapter of American history. This combination of innovation, outreach, and solid humanities is exactly what the Schwartz Prize is meant to recognize."

Georgia Humanities Council president Jamil Zainaldin and New Georgia Encyclopedia managing editor Kelly Caudle accepted the Schwartz Prize on behalf of the Council. Zainaldin and Caudle were accompanied by CRDL co-director Toby Graham, who accepted the award on behalf of the Digital Library of Georgia and his co-director Barbara McCaskill.
MCALESTER, Okla. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Victoria Summer is the newest celebrity name signed on to help a local group running a grassroots campaign called Take McAlester Back in southeastern Oklahoma. The campaign is geared toward getting drugs out of the area and implementing programs for children and adults alike that feed creativity.

The singer and actress, born and raised in Berkshire, England, had exceptional talents from an early age. Victoria started dancing lessons started at 3, piano at ten, acting at twelve while her true love, singing, made its professional debut at the tender age of eleven. She received a scholarship to the prestigious Arts Educational Schools in London and found herself at the top of the class by years end.

Victoria excelled at music theatre with credits that included performances for the Queen, the World Premiere of "Brighton Rock" at the prestigious Almeida Theatre and the musical version of the film "Alfie" to name but a few.

Today Victoria is in Los Angeles working with world class producers to create her own original music. She is also performing at places including the 'Crustacean' in Beverly Hills with Izzy Chait and a Celebrity Gala Event with such artists as Chaka Khan and Chick Corea and working as successful actress in Zombie Diaries.
The film, produced and directed by Ray Haboush (Executive Producer of "The Last House on the Left"), is being distributed by Halcyon International Pictures in early 2011.

"Too many people today are still falling into the trap of drugs and alcohol. As an artist myself, I've seen it happen too often to not take action and actually do something about it," says Summer. "There is an artist in all of us and artists need help and encouragement; talent should be nurtured and given the ability to shine."

Ms. Summer is an Ambassador for The Foundation of a Drug Free World, and fully supports the Take McAlester Back Campaign and its purpose to get drugs out and arts in.

"I am very excited to make my first trip to Oklahoma and I look forward to meeting and chatting with you all; sharing stories and music," adds Ms. Summer. "There isn't a better way to make a comeback from the dark depths of drugs and alcohol abuse than through the Arts. The Take Back McAlester campaign is paving the way for you and your community to join together and get creative!"

Take McAlester Back will be holding the concert at the First Christian Church in McAlester. Summer will be the featured performer singing at the event held on the 20th of November 2010 starting at 7:00 p.m. along with McAlester's favorite violinist Michael Ginsburg and Mayor Kevin Priddle on guitar.
