AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 8, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Bio-Medical Services has received USDA approval and is now offering allergy drop immunotherapy as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment for pet allergy patients. An in-house pilot study is now underway, and preliminary findings are expected in the Fall of 2012.

"With two options for immunotherapy, we can now better tailor treatment to the temperament of the patient, and lifestyle of the pet owner," says Dr. Susan Keesee, Chief Scientific Officer at Bio-Medical Services. "This will allow more patients to receive the allergy treatment they need."

Bio-Medical Services has been following the use of sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) in humans as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment. Allergy drops have been widely used in Europe, and are now gaining favor in the U.S.; the first randomized trial in humans was conducted in 1986 with proven efficacy. In a 2010 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School, sublingual immunotherapy was shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and allergen-specific IgE levels in dogs as well (*Note 1). Allergy drops are now being offered for canine allergy treatment by a select few veterinary teaching hospitals. "Because of its proven efficacy in humans, and early success shown in canines, we feel confident that sublingual immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment modality," says Keesee.

As the gap between human and veterinary medicine narrows, Bio-Medical Services remains in the forefront of serum allergy testing and treatment, providing the most current and effective medicine for pet allergy patients. Bio-Medical Services has achieved many "firsts" in the care of pet allergies. They were the first to offer ELISA serum testing for canine, feline and equine patients.

In 2004, Bio-Medical services was the first to introduce the practice of separating mold, mite and insect allergens into separate treatment from pollen, fiber and epithelia allergens to the veterinary field - following the convention used in human allergy treatment. Currently, Bio-Medical Services is the only laboratory to offer five treatment protocols based on the patient's age, weight, breed, species, and clinical history. And now with two options for administering immunotherapy, patients receive even more customized and effective care for pet allergies.

About Bio-Medical Services:
Bio-Medical Services is a veterinary reference laboratory specializing in allergy testing and treatment for dogs, cats and horses. Founded in 1989, Bio-Medical Services was the first laboratory to develop a commercial application for in vitro allergy diagnostics in the veterinary industry. Bio-Medical Services is based in Austin, TX. Visit http://www.bmslab.com to learn more.
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Jan. 16, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- According to The Futon Shop, conventional mattresses are very likely to contain chemicals, some potentially toxic to humans and/or harmful to the environment. Most of these chemical compounds have a cloud surrounding the information on the possible harms they can cause. The way to go green is to choose a mattress with fewer chemicals or no chemicals. The ideal mattress would have low VOCs, no PBDEs, no formaldehyde, and no phthalates. But what are these chemicals and how do they affect the environment and you?

VOCs:

(VOCs) Volatile organic compounds are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. Most mattresses contain considerable amounts of synthetic and chemical-based foams (polyurethane), plastics and artificial fibers, and most box springs are made with chemically treated wood and chemical adhesives. In fact, almost every mattress type contains at least some polyurethane foam components. A good choice to be free of VOCs is a chemically free 100 percent pure Dunlop Latex mattress.

PBDEs:

Polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs) are major components of commercial formulations often used as flame retardants in furniture foam. There is growing evidence that PBDEs persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, as well as toxicological testing that indicates these chemicals may cause liver toxicity, thyroid toxicity, and neurodevelopmental toxicity. Even though PBDEs are in the process of being banned from use, you can be sure that any older mattress is sure to contain them. If you sleep on an old mattress it is time to upgrade with a USDA certified Organic cotton mattress.

Formaldehyde:

Formaldehyde, a colorless, pungent-smelling gas, can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes and throat, nausea, and difficulty in breathing in some humans exposed at elevated levels (above 0.1 parts per million). High concentrations may trigger attacks in people with asthma. It has also been shown to cause cancer in animals and may cause cancer in humans. Health effects include eye, nose, and throat irritation; wheezing and coughing; fatigue; skin rash; severe allergic reactions. Formaldehyde is typically used to make adhesives that hold mattresses together.

Phthalates:

Phthalates are animal carcinogens and can cause fetal death, malformations, and reproductive toxicity in laboratory animals. Children may be at higher risk of adverse effects of phthalates because of anticipated higher exposures during a time of developmental and physiologic immaturity. Phthalates are not covalently bound to the plastic matrix and leach out of PVC. The Vinyl/PVC surface of a typical baby mattress consists of 30 percent phthalates that can leach out into your child's crib. Why risk your child's life on anything but an organic cotton baby crib mattress.

What is Offgassing?

Polyurethane foam is the number one ingredient in traditional mattresses today. Understanding the dangers from off gassing is why so many Americans are now purchasing organic mattresses. Off gassing from polyurethane foam, releases many harmful petroleum chemicals. These chemicals in mattresses release hydrocarbons that evaporate into the air we breathe throughout a mattress' lifetime. These hydrocarbons are powerful carcinogenic chemicals, attacking and severely damaging the immune and nervous systems of adults and children.

So where can you get a mattress that is chemical free?

The Futon Shop manufactures natural organic futon mattresses and green futon mattresses by combining the most pure and natural elements inside their organic futons to build the most comfortable and natural organic mattresses, sofa bed mattresses and futon mattresses. USDA certified Organic cotton futon mattresses, American grown long crimp Virgin Wool mattresses, chemically free 100 percent pure Dunlop Latex mattresses and beds, VOC free soy-based foam futon mattresses (CertiPUR-US certified), GOTS certified Organic cotton mattress pad protectors, and all their inner springs bed mattresses are made from recycled steel right here in the U.S. They are also a proud founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and a member of the Organic Trade Association. They have been manufacturing American made natural and organic mattresses for over 30 years and have over 2 million happy customers.

In accordance with Federal law, The Futon Shop does use a borate to ensure all mattresses are fire retardant. They will gladly omit the Borate in any mattress purchase order with a note from your doctor or chiropractor.
LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 13, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Since 1974, Dr. Marc Spitz of the Foot Pain Center has been helping patients to beat peripheral neuropathy. After observing epidemic numbers of people developing peripheral neuropathy in their feet, he decided to make this his practice's focus.

In the United States, alone, more than 20 million people suffer with neuropathy, according to the National Peripheral Neuropathy Institute.

"And, while there is no hard and fast cure for peripheral neuropathy, there are ways to help people treat the symptoms and to improve their overall functionality," says Dr. Spitz. "Our goal is to ease discomfort, restore sensation and to slow down the progression of the condition."

So, what is peripheral neuropathy? It is a condition caused by damage to the nerves, resulting in foot pain, numbness, tingling and burning. There are more than 40 causes of peripheral neuropathy including nutritional imbalances; diabetes; spinal problems; adverse reaction to medications; exposure to toxins; and more.

In addition to working with peripheral neuropathy patients, Dr. Spitz also offers a wide array of products to help the condition such as nutritional supplements; orthotics; shoes; massagers; warming lotions; and more.

"I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity to treat so many patients over the years," says Dr. Spitz. "It has been particularly rewarding to have provided a measure of relief and comfort to my patients. I am looking forward to several more years in practice and will continue to work on new, natural treatments and product offerings for peripheral neuropathy."

About Dr. Marc Spitz:
Dr. Spitz is a nationally-renowned podiatrist and a leading podiatrist in Southern California. He has a degree in podiatric medicine and completed his residency in Long Beach, California. He is the co-author of "The Numb Foot Book" (ISBN: 978-0978182052), a guide to the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral neuropathy and a frequent lecturer at UCLA and at the University of California at Irvine. Currently, Dr. Spitz is the leader of the Neuropathy Support Group in Orange County, CA and is a member of the American Academy of Pain Management.
PLACENTIA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Today the Association of Professional Ball Players of America (APBPA) announces the selection of LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP) to offer long-term care education and long-term care insurance coverage to their 11,000 Members. For members that choose to purchase the insurance, applications for individual policies will be completed by LTCFP and underwritten by Transamerica Life Insurance Company.

This development comes on the heels of the Obama Administration's decision to abandon plans to implement the CLASS Act. CLASS, standing for "Community Living Assistance Services and Supports," was the public option for long-term care insurance, the part of health reform championed by the late Ted Kennedy.

Why should healthy, athletic baseball players, of all people, be concerned about future long-term care needs? "They're no different than the general public," says Dick Beverage, The Association Secretary-Treasurer. "Very few plan for their long-term care until it's too late. Years pass and then they may no longer be able to afford insurance."

The cost can be large, according to Cameron Truesdell, LTCFP's CEO. "Let's say a player gets injured or ill and needs long-term care in their home," he says. "According to the MetLife Mature Market Institute, a trained assistant now costs $21 per hour on average. And if the player needs extended care in a nursing home, the annual cost is $83,500 for a private room." Protecting a retirement plan against such a hit is "good business for all professionals including baseball players."

The Association was created in 1924 when twelve former ballplayers met in Los Angeles and determined that there was a need to take care of the less fortunate members of their profession. From these beginnings the Association has provided financial assistance for those professional baseball players, coaches, umpires, scouts, clubhouse men and other members of the baseball family who are in need. No distinction is made between the major leagues and the minor leagues. Participation in what is a unique fraternity is the defining factor.

Major League Baseball and the National Association of the Minor Leagues have both endorsed APBPA as their benevolent organization. Many of the greatest names in baseball have served on The Association's Board: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel and Sparky Anderson. Current Board members include Roland Hemond, Mike Scioscia, Tony LaRussa and Tom Lasorda.

The Association does not publicize its benevolent efforts. This is by design, to protect the dignity and anonymity of their members. All cases where financial assistance is requested are evaluated and investigated with great discretion.

Says Roland Hemond, the Association President, "We've helped over three thousand ballplayers, some in the Hall of Fame and others who enjoyed only a brief career." Total financial assistance has been in the millions, including helping with long-term care costs, but benevolent help has its limits. With the new program announced today, "many members will see the benefit of purchasing long-term care insurance, for themselves and family, when they're healthy and it is most affordable," says Hemond. "This will allow the Association to concentrate its benevolent help on older, retired players, those who have been ravaged by illness and the infirmities of old age."

Additional information may be requested from Dick Beverage, Secretary-Treasurer, at 714-528-2012 or http://www.APBPA.org .

LTCFP is a co-founder and sponsor of the "3 in 4 Need More" campaign, which seeks to alert Americans to the long-term healthcare crisis, and to multiply the number protected by long-term care planning. More information is available at http://www.ltcfp.com .

The almost five minute video gives the viewer an inside look at the real emotion and success of a Narconon graduate. This particular DVD, just released in late November shows only a handful of Narconon graduates on their final day attending their graduation ceremony at the Narconon center located in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada.

"We released this new DVD and its all raw emotion! We knew this was going to get emotional; we screened this video to many different audiences over a few weeks before we launched it. There wasn't a single person in the room whom wasn't crying or impacted in some way," stated JF Dubreuil, director of marketing and promotion at Narconon Trois-Rivieres.

The video, while composed with music from a local musician, gives the viewer an idea of how successful the Narconon program was for this handful of graduates.

"It doesn't hold anything back; Narconon released this knowing it was going to impact people on a very emotional level, and that is exactly what it did," JF went on to say.

The DVD has been shipped out nation-wide throughout Canada and the United States and will continue to be promoted to as many people, organizations, and groups as possible. KIRKLAND, Wash., Nov. 21, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Thanksgiving is a time to join with family to say thanks for life's blessings. It can also be a time to make sure those blessings continue year after year, uninterrupted by the financial impact of long-term health issues. 'According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 7 in 10 of us over age 65 will need long-term care at some point,' says Denise Gott, National Sales Manager and Chairman of the Board of LTC Financial Partners, LLC (LTCFP).

"According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 7 in 10 of us over age 65 will need long-term care at some point," says Denise Gott, National Sales Manager and Chairman of the Board of LTC Financial Partners, LLC (LTCFP).

"But when you consider that several family members are at risk," she continues, "the odds of your family unit being impacted are almost 100 percent."

This hard fact doesn't have to be bad news, though, Gott asserts. She recommends bringing up the LTC issue at some point Thursday. "When is a better time?" she asks. "Everyone will be together in one place. And hopefully everyone will be in a relaxed, receptive frame of mind."

Questions that might be raised include -

* If you, your spouse, Mom or Dad, your brother or sister, or other family member suddenly needs long-term care, how will it be paid for? Is an LTC insurance policy in force? If not, would it make sense to look into one?

* If Mom or Day, say, were to need long-term care suddenly, who would have the time to care for them personally if there's no insurance to cover professional care? Who has a spare room, or who could afford time away from work or family responsibilities?

* What about the question of inheritance? Are you expecting something from Mom or Dad - to help pay your kids' college bills, perhaps? Or if you're the aging Mom or Dad, are you expecting to pass something on to your family? Remember that long-term care expenses can quickly consume one's assets, leaving little or nothing to bequeath.

* Is Medicaid an option you're considering for long-term care expenses? If so, remember that one must exhaust assets in order to qualify for Medicaid.

"Why not make every Thanksgiving, from here on, a little more hopeful - by attacking the long-term care threat now?" Gott asks. "Consider all the thinking and discussing you do just to plan for the turkey dinner and getting together. Why not make time for a side conversation on long-term care - an issue vital to everyone's future happiness?"

LTC Financial Partners is one of the nation's largest and most experienced agencies specializing in long-term care insurance. More information is available at the LTCFP website: http://www.ltcfp.com .

LTCFP is a co-founder and sponsor of the "3 in 4 Need More" campaign, which seeks to alert Americans to the long-term healthcare crisis, and to multiply the number protected by long-term care planning. The 3in4 Association is currently sponsoring the 3in4 Caregiver Contest, which has $50,000 worth of prizes in the form of a home caregiver makeover, as a way of "saying thanks": http://3in4contest.com/index.html .
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 16, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- What do Hope Solo, Blake Griffin, Jose Reyes, Gretchen Bleiler and Lacy Young have in common? They all appeared in the buff recently to celebrate their bodies. Lacy Young isn't a famous athlete with national endorsement deals, nor is she admired by millions of fans. But she felt the need to bare it all in the name of eating healthy.

"I was looking at The Body Issue of the ESPN Magazine, and that's when the idea struck me. Seeing all these athletes bare it all and embrace their bodies in a tasteful way really inspired me. I thought, 'Why don't I do that with kale and carrots?'"

Young is referring to the annual bodies issue produced by ESPN: The Magazine where certain athletes are chosen to appear in the nude with or without props. The issues have proven to be very popular among sports and non-sports fans alike.

"I wanted to do the same with my body," Young stated. "I wanted to bring attention to loving your body for what it is. It took me nearly 32 years to be able to say that confidently and I don't know if I would've said that without having learned how to feed myself loving foods first," Young concluded.

"Eating the right foods to feed my body changed my life, and I wanted to do the same for others," she added.

Lacy then enrolled herself at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in New York City. Young's philosophy is simple: "It's all about adding in and crowding out. I help clients add in healthy food and lifestyle choices and allow the unhealthy choices to just fall away."

In short, Young believes that it's about loving your body and food is a gateway to achieving that. "Many people are emotional eaters and the more they eat, the less they love their bodies. I'd like to change all that. I'd like to begin a campaign where women shed their clothes and pose with their favorite fruit or vegetable," Young added. "How liberating would that be?"

So Lacy Young is on a campaign to liberate women's bodies as well as their minds. If you would like to be part of Lacy's campaign, you can send your photos to www.lacyyoung.com . Please visit the website's homepage for rules and regulations. Young is also available for one-on-one and group coaching.
WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 7, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Gingrich Foundation has recognized the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) as its October Charity of the Month.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1991 by Janelle Hail, a breast cancer survivor first diagnosed in 1980, at age 34. Janelle survived because her cancer was detected early. Today NBCF is dedicated to saving lives through early detection of breast cancer and increasing awareness through education.

Through its flagship initiative, the National Mammography Program, NBCF provides free mammograms to under served women in all 50 states. It also emphasizes the importance of regular mammography screening.

The National Breast Cancer Foundation's "Beyond the Shock" (www.beyondtheshock.com) Program serves as an online resource that helps women learn more about breast cancer, as well as communicate with others who are affected by the disease.

"As a 31-year breast cancer survivor, I understand the importance of early detection," says NBCF Founder and CEO, Janelle Hail. "Early detection saved my life and that's why it is NBCF's mission to educate the importance of early detection and provide mammograms for those in need."

"One in every eight women is diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime," said Callista Gingrich, President of the Gingrich Foundation. "The National Breast Cancer Foundation encourages early detection and consequently helps save untold lives."

The Gingrich Foundation is a domestic non-profit corporation founded by Callista and Newt Gingrich to support charitable purposes.

A list of facilities in the NBCF network can be found at www.nationalbreastcancer.org/About-NBCF/Our-Mission/.
MADISON, Wis., Oct. 4, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Collegiate Caregivers announced this week the launch of a new home care business that aims to revolutionize the senior care industry through an intelligent and unique use of college students and technology.

"What sets Collegiate Caregivers apart from other long-term care or senior care services is that we employ only the most educated caregivers in the industry," says Curtis J. Polzin, executive director, Collegiate Caregivers. "Our caregivers must be enrolled in a healthcare-related college program or be a college graduate."

When it comes to Collegiate Caregivers, service benefits are numerous. Not only do clients receive highly educated, respectable caregivers with a vested interest in their care, they also receive state-of-the-art monitoring through an electronic medical record system.

Cost is also beneficial. Collegiate Caregivers provides quality care services at a fraction of the cost when compared to other senior care alternatives. The bottom line is that Collegiate Caregivers can save seniors money.

For example, on average, for three hours of one-on-one care, per day, every day, Collegiate Caregivers can save clients approximately 48 percent when compared to assisted living facilities; 75 percent when compared to nursing homes; and 77 percent when compared to memory care units.

And quality care at home is something that seniors really prefer.

"Having a nursing student as my caregiver brought a professional approach to my needs that I couldn't obtain anywhere else," says Steven Kane, a Collegiate Caregiver client.

The relationship between students and seniors is really one that is mutually beneficial. For instance, Collegiate Caregivers recently received a call from a woman who had fallen and was about to be released from a rehabilitation center, but needed assistance at home to continue with balance exercises.

This client was quickly matched up with a caregiver who is in graduate school studying to be a physical therapist.

"Collegiate Caregivers has provided me with a job that I need to help pay for college within the industry that I am studying to work in," says Andrea O'Leary, physical therapy graduate student.

Polzin adds that Collegiate Caregivers ensures that all of its caregivers are appropriately trained prior to entering a client's home.

"This happens through intense online and classroom training taught by a Registered Nurse who also oversees all client care," explains Polzin.

Collegiate Caregivers creates a positive alternative for seniors, college students and the healthcare industry.
