AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 8, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Bio-Medical Services has received USDA approval and is now offering allergy drop immunotherapy as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment for pet allergy patients. An in-house pilot study is now underway, and preliminary findings are expected in the Fall of 2012.

"With two options for immunotherapy, we can now better tailor treatment to the temperament of the patient, and lifestyle of the pet owner," says Dr. Susan Keesee, Chief Scientific Officer at Bio-Medical Services. "This will allow more patients to receive the allergy treatment they need."

Bio-Medical Services has been following the use of sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) in humans as an alternative method for administering allergy treatment. Allergy drops have been widely used in Europe, and are now gaining favor in the U.S.; the first randomized trial in humans was conducted in 1986 with proven efficacy. In a 2010 study conducted by the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School, sublingual immunotherapy was shown to be effective in reducing symptoms and allergen-specific IgE levels in dogs as well (*Note 1). Allergy drops are now being offered for canine allergy treatment by a select few veterinary teaching hospitals. "Because of its proven efficacy in humans, and early success shown in canines, we feel confident that sublingual immunotherapy is a safe and effective treatment modality," says Keesee.

As the gap between human and veterinary medicine narrows, Bio-Medical Services remains in the forefront of serum allergy testing and treatment, providing the most current and effective medicine for pet allergy patients. Bio-Medical Services has achieved many "firsts" in the care of pet allergies. They were the first to offer ELISA serum testing for canine, feline and equine patients.

In 2004, Bio-Medical services was the first to introduce the practice of separating mold, mite and insect allergens into separate treatment from pollen, fiber and epithelia allergens to the veterinary field - following the convention used in human allergy treatment. Currently, Bio-Medical Services is the only laboratory to offer five treatment protocols based on the patient's age, weight, breed, species, and clinical history. And now with two options for administering immunotherapy, patients receive even more customized and effective care for pet allergies.

About Bio-Medical Services:
Bio-Medical Services is a veterinary reference laboratory specializing in allergy testing and treatment for dogs, cats and horses. Founded in 1989, Bio-Medical Services was the first laboratory to develop a commercial application for in vitro allergy diagnostics in the veterinary industry. Bio-Medical Services is based in Austin, TX. Visit http://www.bmslab.com to learn more.
HOUSTON, Texas, Feb. 3, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- TeDan Surgical Innovations, industry leader in surgical access instrumentation, announces the launch of the Phantom Series MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System. TeDan Surgical's revolutionary hip retractor utilizes a system of adjustable surgical arms with attachable retractors, enabling surgeons to perform the entire procedure without a fracture table or a surgical assistant.

Dr. Lawrence Menendez and Dr. Daniel Allison, Orthopedic Surgeons at the University of Southern California Medical Center, partnered with TeDan Surgical to design and develop this innovative retractor.

Dr. Allison shared their idea with the TSI team. "We wanted to create a system that could place the anterior approach to hip replacement into the hands of any orthopedic surgeon, minimizing trauma to the patient's soft tissues and bone, while taking away the need for any surgical assistants."

The Phantom Series MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System has been used in surgery over twenty times. Evaluations by surgeons have deemed the system a success.

According to Dr. Menendez, initial trials exceeded expectations. "We were nervous before the first surgery that things wouldn't come together or the surgery would become more complicated, but from the first go-round, the surgery was made much easier. Since then we've only been making it better. We set some lofty goals and feel like we've accomplished them. We are very excited to start giving this system to other surgeons and patients."

With the realization that performing hip replacements through the anterior approach may expedite patient recovery time and reduce post-operative discomfort, surgeons, with increasing frequency, are opting to operate using the anterior technique. Previously, this technically demanding approach has only been possible using a Judet style fracture table and two surgical assistants. The Phantom MIS Anterior Hip Retractor System allows surgeons to access the surgical site through the anterior approach on a standard operating table without a fracture table or additional personnel.

About TeDan Surgical Innovations:
Founded in 2006 with the goal to innovate existing retraction techniques, TeDan Surgical has become an industry leader in access instrumentation. TeDan's patented retractors increase visibility for surgeons while decreasing patient wound size and the potential for tissue trauma. Experience the difference. Experience Innovation.
HIGHLAND PARK, N.J., Feb. 1, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- 2012 marks an important milestone for Belvidere Pharmacy. It opened new doors in its new hometown of Highland Park. When owner and President Shara Rudner, R.Ph. took the reins of the business in 1996, it was a typical retail pharmacy stocked with everything from school to surgical supplies. But from the beginning, Belvidere's staff handled requests for compounded, or custom-made, medications from veterinarians, physicians and specialists.

Word quickly spread about the pharmacy's service and expertise. In 1998, the decision was made to drop the retail side and focus exclusively on compounding.

Compounding is the answer to health issues for countless patients: some patients may be allergic to ingredients found in mass-produced medications, some need to take more obscure drugs that are no longer manufactured, or may require a specific dose that isn't commercially available. Others have difficulty with swallowing pills and would welcome a topical or liquid form of their medications. Compounding can meet all of these individual needs, and more.

Rudner always had great hopes for her business. But even she may not have foreseen how Belvidere would blossom over the next decade and a half. The name Belvidere has become synonymous with quality, and its reputation has grown beyond the physicians and patients it served at the outset. As a result, the organization has been commissioned by several pharmaceutical companies for clinical trials.

In 2007, Belvidere became the first PCAB accredited compounding pharmacy in New Jersey; earning it a place of honor on the national compounding stage. It was awarded reaccreditation in 2010.

The pharmacy's new, ultramodern space will bring a host of conveniences and a serious "cool" factor to its clientele of patients, physicians and veterinarians. It's considerably larger, with a spacious and comfortable waiting area; has a street-level entrance; and is easily accessible from major roads and several area hospitals. The pharmacy's new design is contemporary, inviting, and "green," featuring a seamless, metallic copper epoxy floor, solar panels, paper-free faxes and more.

The most important upgrades are those behind the scenes.

"We've always prided ourselves on being on the cutting edge," said Rudner, "We offer nothing less to our clientele. But this move presented a unique opportunity: To create a facility that significantly exceeds national standards. And we are thrilled to have achieved that." The Highland Park facility now offers multiple ISO class 7 compounding rooms; new clean rooms; and equipment designed to prepare sterile preparations. It's all brand new, and eclipses most of Belvidere's competitors.

"With our new facility, we're able to accommodate individual customized medications, as well as any scale clinical study," said Rudner. "Our innovative facility goes hand-in-hand with our extensive policies and procedures."

According to Rudner, the demand for individualized medications is rapidly on the rise for patients of every species. In addition to formulating medications for people, Belvidere also specializes in compounding veterinary prescriptions. The pharmacy serves practitioners and patients from a wide geographic area and the full spectrum of specialties. Belvidere accepts most insurance plans in order to meet the growing needs of its customers.

With its new facility, a new chapter begins for this important player in a growing sector of modern healthcare.

"We're very excited to call Highland Park home for Belvidere Pharmacy. It's a vibrant community," said Rudner. "We look forward to thriving here for years to come."
KIRKLAND, Wash., Jan. 24, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Christopher Gardner, played by Will Smith in "The Pursuit of Happyness" (Columbia Pictures, 2006), was jobless and homeless with a baby boy to support. He bounced back, gaining wealth and a future for his son. Inspired by this example, LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP) invited Gardner to speak at the company's annual meeting, held this year in New Orleans, January 13-15. "We're bouncing back from a setback of our own," says Cameron Truesdell, LTCFP's CEO. "And we need to think like Chris."

There are key parallels between Gardner and LTCFP:

AN UNEXPECTED SETBACK: When, as a young father, Gardner was offered an internship with a stock brokerage, he quit his job for the chance to get rich in the stock market. He was on his way! But when he reported for work, the man who hired him was no longer with the company. Gardner was out in the cold, unable even to claim unemployment. Setbacks such as these led to his wife leaving him, followed by homelessness and a child in diapers to care for.

In 2010 LTCFP was on its way too, leading its industry in growth and making the Inc. Magazine list of America's 5,000 fastest-growing companies for three years in a row. Then LTCFP'S biggest client, a $15 million account, suddenly dropped out. That made 2011 the company's first down year since its formation in 2003.

COMEBACK MAGIC: Though homeless and without training, Gardner aspired to make it big as a stock broker. He never deviated from this goal and would later give advice such as "Make your dream bigger than yourself and never underestimate the power of vision." Throughout the leanest years, Gardner took any menial job he could find to feed himself and his boy while looking for stock-market opportunities. Eventually he landed a spot in a training program with Dean Witter Reynolds, but never earned enough to make ends meet. Yet he persisted, eventually landing a position with Bear Sterns & Co., where he became a top earner. In time he achieved wealth and international fame as rags-to-riches stockbroker and motivational author.

Like Gardner, "I'm incredibly optimistic about what we have coming up," says Truesdell. "When one door closes another opens. But we're not just cracking the door open, we're crashing through it. The things our people have already accomplished have taken my breath away." Following a brief period of necessary belt-tightening, LTCFP has pursued many bullish initiatives.

These include:
* Uninterrupted acceptance of qualified new agents,
* An increasing flow of leads for agents through Internet, direct-mail, corporate, association, and alliance-partner sources.
* Undiminished marketing and public relations support,
* Redoubled emphasis on telemarketing and Internet sales,
* Creation of a new division, the Worksite Academy, to promote long-term care insurance as an employee benefit,
* Sponsorship of the "3 in 4 Need More" campaign and launching of "3 in 4" themed seminars, to build awareness of the need for long-term care planning,
* Increased revenue from LTCFP's affiliate Reverse Mortgage Direct, which turned profitable after just two years, and
* Introduction of a new Annuity and Life Insurance division.

"Everyone has challenges and setbacks," says Truesdell. "And we all have the power to get back to where we want to be." He and Gardner agree that vision and focus are important, but that consistency and extra effort are absolutely vital too.

Quoting from the book, "212: The Extra Degree" by Sam Parker, Truesdell says, "At 211 degrees, water is hot, but at 212 degrees, it boils. With boiling water comes steam, and steam can power a locomotive." One extra degree of effort makes all the difference, he asserts. "This simple analogy gives the definition of excellence, separating the great from the good. LTCFP aims to be great."
DULUTH, Ga., Jan. 19, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Third Law Sourcing has chosen WellStar Health System as its 2012 charitable engagement. The firm will help the healthcare system reduce annual costs through strategic vendor negotiations. Each year, Third Law Sourcing provides pro bono services to a non-profit organization located in the Southeast with over $500 million in revenue. The philanthropic program was established with the awareness that each dollar of savings directly supports the non-profit's mission.
"With reimbursements continuing to go down, provider organizations must pay attention to every spending category throughout the organization," said Anthony Trupiano, vice president, supply chain, WellStar Health System. "When I joined WellStar in 2008, our initial focus was on clinical supply procurement. Now our focus has shifted to include non-supply items, and we look forward to working with Third Law Sourcing to identify every savings opportunity available."
LONG BEACH, Calif., Jan. 13, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Since 1974, Dr. Marc Spitz of the Foot Pain Center has been helping patients to beat peripheral neuropathy. After observing epidemic numbers of people developing peripheral neuropathy in their feet, he decided to make this his practice's focus.

In the United States, alone, more than 20 million people suffer with neuropathy, according to the National Peripheral Neuropathy Institute.

"And, while there is no hard and fast cure for peripheral neuropathy, there are ways to help people treat the symptoms and to improve their overall functionality," says Dr. Spitz. "Our goal is to ease discomfort, restore sensation and to slow down the progression of the condition."

So, what is peripheral neuropathy? It is a condition caused by damage to the nerves, resulting in foot pain, numbness, tingling and burning. There are more than 40 causes of peripheral neuropathy including nutritional imbalances; diabetes; spinal problems; adverse reaction to medications; exposure to toxins; and more.

In addition to working with peripheral neuropathy patients, Dr. Spitz also offers a wide array of products to help the condition such as nutritional supplements; orthotics; shoes; massagers; warming lotions; and more.

"I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity to treat so many patients over the years," says Dr. Spitz. "It has been particularly rewarding to have provided a measure of relief and comfort to my patients. I am looking forward to several more years in practice and will continue to work on new, natural treatments and product offerings for peripheral neuropathy."

About Dr. Marc Spitz:
Dr. Spitz is a nationally-renowned podiatrist and a leading podiatrist in Southern California. He has a degree in podiatric medicine and completed his residency in Long Beach, California. He is the co-author of "The Numb Foot Book" (ISBN: 978-0978182052), a guide to the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral neuropathy and a frequent lecturer at UCLA and at the University of California at Irvine. WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 9, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Dr. David Lewis, internationally known whistleblower and respected expert on institutional fraud, released a report today calling for a formal investigation into the practices of the British Medical Journal (BMJ), and specifically into the actions of its editor, Dr. Fiona Godlee, and Brian Deer, a reporter she hired to write a series of articles which appeared in the journal beginning on January 4, 2011.

The BMJ articles accuse Dr. Andrew Wakefield of committing scientific fraud in a 1998 Lancet publication - http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140673697110960/fulltext - he co-authored that brought global attention to a link many parents and physicians suspect may exist between autism and children who are genetically predisposed to adverse reactions from the Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

The BMJ, Deer, and Godlee alleged that Wakefield fabricated a diagnosis of colitis in most of the 12 children described in The Lancet article - calling Wakefield's work an "elaborate fraud" intended to create an "MMR scare" - so Wakefield could profit from a patent related to his research.

"Documents recovered from Dr. Wakefield's files during my investigation at the National Whistleblowers Center (NWC) - www.researchmisconduct.org - reveal that a pathologist associated with the study, Dr. Andrew Anthony, interpreted a number of the children's biopsies as evidence of colitis," explained Dr. Lewis. "Altogether, the evidence contained in Wakefield's files suggested to me that the BMJ's fraud theory was more tabloid news than science."

According to documents Lewis filed with Sir John Tooke, Vice-Provost for Health at the University College London (UCL) where The Lancet study was done, BMJ Editor Godlee responded to the Lewis revelations by "cherry-picking the evidence and coming up with a grand conspiracy theory involving 'institutional research misconduct'. Alleged fraudsters now include University College London (UCL) administrators, the Royal Free Hospital, and all 13 co-authors of the Lancet study."

UCL President Malcolm Grant notified Lewis that, because his charges were "so serious," he urged Dr. Lewis to inform Dr. Godlee and Deer "at the earliest opportunity."

Lewis also reports that Godlee has previously acknowledged the BMJ Group receives funding from the two manufacturers of the MMR vaccine, Merck and GlaxoSmithKline, and has testified in a Parliamentary inquiry that peer-reviewed medical journals are "the marketing arm of the pharmaceutical industry." Lewis added: "Apparently scientists who question certain government policies and industry practices can be destroyed for a price. If so, this kind of tabloid science poses a genuine threat to public health."

On January 3, 2012, Dr. Wakefield filed suit against the BMJ and Brian Deer ( http://www.courthousenews.com/2012/01/04/BritMedJ.pdf ). Last September, Columbia University published a major study supporting the link Dr. Wakefield established between autism and enterocolitis ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3174969/ ).
PLACENTIA, Calif., Jan. 4, 2012 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Today the Association of Professional Ball Players of America (APBPA) announces the selection of LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP) to offer long-term care education and long-term care insurance coverage to their 11,000 Members. For members that choose to purchase the insurance, applications for individual policies will be completed by LTCFP and underwritten by Transamerica Life Insurance Company.

This development comes on the heels of the Obama Administration's decision to abandon plans to implement the CLASS Act. CLASS, standing for "Community Living Assistance Services and Supports," was the public option for long-term care insurance, the part of health reform championed by the late Ted Kennedy.

Why should healthy, athletic baseball players, of all people, be concerned about future long-term care needs? "They're no different than the general public," says Dick Beverage, The Association Secretary-Treasurer. "Very few plan for their long-term care until it's too late. Years pass and then they may no longer be able to afford insurance."

The cost can be large, according to Cameron Truesdell, LTCFP's CEO. "Let's say a player gets injured or ill and needs long-term care in their home," he says. "According to the MetLife Mature Market Institute, a trained assistant now costs $21 per hour on average. And if the player needs extended care in a nursing home, the annual cost is $83,500 for a private room." Protecting a retirement plan against such a hit is "good business for all professionals including baseball players."

The Association was created in 1924 when twelve former ballplayers met in Los Angeles and determined that there was a need to take care of the less fortunate members of their profession. From these beginnings the Association has provided financial assistance for those professional baseball players, coaches, umpires, scouts, clubhouse men and other members of the baseball family who are in need. No distinction is made between the major leagues and the minor leagues. Participation in what is a unique fraternity is the defining factor.

Major League Baseball and the National Association of the Minor Leagues have both endorsed APBPA as their benevolent organization. Many of the greatest names in baseball have served on The Association's Board: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Casey Stengel and Sparky Anderson. Current Board members include Roland Hemond, Mike Scioscia, Tony LaRussa and Tom Lasorda.

The Association does not publicize its benevolent efforts. This is by design, to protect the dignity and anonymity of their members. All cases where financial assistance is requested are evaluated and investigated with great discretion.

Says Roland Hemond, the Association President, "We've helped over three thousand ballplayers, some in the Hall of Fame and others who enjoyed only a brief career." Total financial assistance has been in the millions, including helping with long-term care costs, but benevolent help has its limits. With the new program announced today, "many members will see the benefit of purchasing long-term care insurance, for themselves and family, when they're healthy and it is most affordable," says Hemond. "This will allow the Association to concentrate its benevolent help on older, retired players, those who have been ravaged by illness and the infirmities of old age."

Additional information may be requested from Dick Beverage, Secretary-Treasurer, at 714-528-2012 or http://www.APBPA.org .

LTCFP is a co-founder and sponsor of the "3 in 4 Need More" campaign, which seeks to alert Americans to the long-term healthcare crisis, and to multiply the number protected by long-term care planning. More information is available at http://www.ltcfp.com .

BETHLEHEM, Pa., Dec. 21, 2011 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Sher Fertility Institute announced today that Joel and Mary Roberts of Slatington, PA would be receiving free In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) treatments as the winners of a contest that the company offered this month. The donation is part of Sher Fertility Institute's "Giving Back" initiative, intended to help some of the estimated 1 million couples in the U.S. that need advanced fertility treatment, but aren't able to afford it. The donated treatment is valued at $10,000.

The contest was open to anyone who needed IVF treatment in order to conceive and required entrants to tell their story detailing why they deserved to win the treatment. Almost 100 couples submitted entries, which were reviewed by a panel of clinical and administrative staff at Sher Fertility Institute. The panel selected 10 finalists, whose stories were then posted on the company's Facebook Page and website, where visitors could vote for their choice.

Sher Fertility Institute had originally planned to donate IVF treatment to just one couple, but decided to open the donation up to three couples instead.

"The stories that came in were heart-wrenching and inspiring," said Sher Fertility Institute Lehigh Valley Medical Director Dr. Albert Peters. "Every one of these couples was deserving of the donated treatment, so in the end, we felt that offering it to three couples was the right thing to do."

Joel and Mary have been struggling to have a baby for several years and have undergone several unsuccessful treatments, but weren't able to find the financial resources for In Vitro Fertilization, which their doctor told them was their best option for conceiving. IVF treatment typically costs $10,000-$15,000.

"We are so grateful for this opportunity and will always remember this day," said Mary. "We have been through a heartbreaking 3 years of trying to conceive, paid thousands of dollars trying to get pregnant, and now we finally feel like there is hope."

Their story, along with those of the other finalists are posted on the Sher Fertility Institute website: www.haveababy.com/news-menu/269 . Mary has also been an active voice in the infertility community and chronicles her journey on her blog.

She recently created a video, "Mary's Journey": http://animoto.com/play/kYpCrQf29N4TS0SpHiF5wA .

During the last three decades, Sher Fertility Institutes and their doctors have donated hundreds of free fertility treatments to patients and couples from all over the country.

Sher Fertility Institute had originally planned to donate IVF treatment to just one couple, but decided to open the donation up to three couples instead.

"The stories that came in were absolutely heartbreaking," said Dr. Nicole Browne of Sher Fertility Institute. "Every one of these couples was deserving of the donated treatment, so we couldn't be happier for Victoria and Walter."

The couple have been struggling to have a baby for more than 5 years and have undergone numerous unsuccessful treatments, including several rounds of In Vitro Fertilization, which typically costs $10,000-$15,000. They had tapped out all of their financial resources and were unable to proceed with any further treatment. "Two weeks ago we felt all hope was lost of ever meeting the child we have dreamed of for so long," said Victoria. "Now, thanks to Sher Fertility Institute, along with family, friends and many people we have never even met, that dream is more alive than ever. This is truly a Christmas Miracle!"

Their story, along with those of the other finalists are posted on the Sher Fertility Institute website at http://www.haveababy.com/news-menu/269 .
During the last three decades, Dr. Sher and Sher Fertility Institute have donated hundreds of free fertility treatments to patients and couples from all over the country.
