DOT Cracking Down on Undeclared Hazmat Shipping, says Lion Technology

LAFAYETTE, N.J., Oct. 21 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- Lion Technology, the nation's leader in regulatory compliance training, is presenting a unique four-day training series on the DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations. On day one and two, Lion will cover the DOT rules during the "Hazardous Materials Transportation Certification" workshop; day three will focus on "Shipping Hazardous Materials by Air"; and day four will discuss "Shipping Hazardous Materials by Vessel." Students may attend one, two, or all three workshops. The training will be held in: Kansas City, MO, on November 9-12; Detroit, MI, on November 9-12; Cincinnati, OH, on November 16-19; Pittsburgh, PA, on December 7-10; and Chicago, IL, on December 14-17.The workshops feature in-depth discussions of the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations and the IATA and IMDG Dangerous Goods Regulations, with an emphasis on the differences between the regulations and the critical components of hazmat shipping, including classification, shipping papers, package selection, package marking and labeling, and recordkeeping. The fee for the two-day workshop is $695 per person. Each additional day is $495 per person. Both the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are taking actions to reduce undeclared shipments and the illegal transport of hazardous materials via airline, truck, rail, ship, and pipeline. Undeclared shipments of hazardous materials are predominately aerosols and flammable liquids (e.g., paint and paint-related materials), as well as dry ice, perfume products, and cigarette lighters. As a result, the regulated community can expect to see an increase in enforcement and inspection efforts. Before a hazardous material is transported in commerce, it must be properly classified, described, packaged, marked, and labeled as prescribed by the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations. The DOT also mandates that all hazmat employees who "directly affect the safety of hazardous materials transportation" be trained and tested on these same regulations. Hazmat employees must have additional training on the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and IMDG Code if shipping by air or ocean.
