One Day - Peace in Middle East? Never VERONA, NJ - April 15, 2003 /Send2Press/ -- A majority of Americans think Iraq will have a stable, Democratic government in 3 years or less, according to a series of public opinion polls just completed by SurveyUSA. But the same Americans, when asked when there will be peace in the Middle East, are much less optimistic. A majority answer, "never." SurveyUSA interviewed 500 representative adults in each of 22 separate metropolitan areas. Results of the surveys, completed April 7, appear at SurveyUSA's website, www.surveyusa.com. In Atlanta, for example, 63% of adults say Iraq will have a stable Democratic government in 3 years or less (23% say it will take 1 year; 24% say 2 years; 16% say 3 years). When the same respondents are asked how long until there is peace in the Middle East, 50% say "never" (6% say 1 year; 8% say 2 years; 8% say 3 years; 26% say 4 or more years; 50% say never). SurveyUSA polling conducted for WXIA-TV. In Pittsburgh, 64% say Iraq will be stable in 3 years or less (19% say 1 year; 29% say 2 years; 16% say 3 years). But 56% say peace in the Middle East will happen "never" (3% say 1 year; 6% say 2 years; 7% say 3 years; 26% say 4 or more years; 56% say never). SurveyUSA polling conducted for KDKA-TV. In Knoxville, 58% say there will "never" be peace, in polling for WBIR-TV. In Denver, 53% say there will "never" be peace, in polling for KUSA-TV. Americans do not want France, Russia and Germany to have a say in how the new government of Iraq is set up, according to a separate series of 21 SurveyUSA polls completed on April 11. Americans overwhelmingly want Great Britain, Iraq and the United States to have a say. In Tampa, for example, just 14% of adults say France should have a voice in a new Iraq, 17% say Germany should have a voice, 19% say Russia should have a voice. By contrast, 82% say Great Britain should have a voice, 91% say the United States should have a voice, and 93% say the Iraqi people should have a voice. SurveyUSA polling conducted for WFLA-TV. In St. Louis, just 15% say France should have a voice, 18% say Germany should have a voice, and 14% say Russia should have a voice.
