FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -------------------------- Of interest to editors, freelancers, covering: sports/football, men's interests, general editorial Fan Based CF16 Coalition Meets With President Scott Cowen - Tulane University, To Discuss New College Football Playoff Format ATLANTA, GA - August 5, 2003 (Send2Press Newswire) -- With a 16 team college football playoff system, a true national champion will be determined on the field and not by monopolistic business deals or computers such as the current Bowl Championship Series (BCS). Mark Pedersen, Executive Director of the CF16 Coalition, said, "CF16 is a non-profit organization focused on protecting the sanctity of college football and thousands of student-athlete scholarships at risk due to the unfair and rigged BCS system. Just a few weeks ago, Tulane University's board voted to determine whether or not they should keep their athletics program due to financial losses in that department. If eliminated, approximately 85 student-athlete scholarships could have been lost and Tulane alumni and fans could have lost their 110 year old football tradition. We can't allow this to happen all over the country." "Because of the emotional loyalty to a particular college or university, millions of fans across the United States and thousands of college football student-athletes are being cheated because of the current BCS monopoly and structure, including current BCS affiliated schools," Pedersen says. The CF16 Coalition supports the newly organized Presidential Coalition for Athletics Reform (PCAR), started by Dr. Scott Cowen, President of Tulane University. The PCAR Coalition is comprised of 44 non-BCS universities seeking a more equitable post season playoff solution versus the current BCS system and additional athletic-academic reforms. "President Cowen and I have met and share similar goals for change," Pedersen added. "The CF16 playoff initiative states that, because of its unique character, college football is a very different product in the marketplace and is impossible to replace. The March Madness of the 64-team NCAA Basketball Tournament is also irreplaceable. Why should it be any different for football?" CF16 is dedicated to becoming the voice of the millions of disenfranchised fans across the country who want to see a college football playoff system implemented for Div I-A.
