One particular school of thought advocates the "disease concept," which supports the notion that a drug addiction is an inherited disease and that the individual is permanently ill at the genetic level, even for those experiencing long periods of sobriety. However, all these views on drug addiction are still widely disputed and none have been concretely proven to prevail over the others.
