The celebration and world record attempt, scheduled for Sun., May 25, noon until 9:00 p.m., is at Gadaleto's at 246 Main Street and at the neighboring Joe's East-West at 254 Main Street, New Paltz. The Guinness World Records title for the largest serving of fish and chips, coveted on both sides of the Pond, has been long-held by London's famous fish houses. Gadaleto's hopes to win the title by frying a 40-lb piece of fish, more than 20-pounds of chips or fried potatoes, and just the right amount of vinegar. "The U.K. may have started fish and chips," says Vargo, "but at Gadaleto's we've perfected the fry. We're confident we'll create a fish tale that will make the Hudson Valley proud." Entertainment includes music by Studio Stu, Duo Loco, Wil Solomon, Big Deep, Too Human, Helen Avakian, Heinzevino, and Monica's Knee Pads, and a performance by comedian John Bongiorno. The event will benefit the music program at the New Paltz Teen Seen, a non-profit, community-supported youth center serving more than 100 children each day for supervised after-school programs and weekend activities. Donald Wilen, New Paltz Town Supervisor who will certify the fish and chips weigh-in says, "I think it's great that New Paltz' own Gadaleto's is going for the record books. I'm thankful Gadaleto's is giving back to New Paltz and recognizing the value the Teen Seen programs bring to the youth and families of this community." The event is free and open to the public. For $10.00 guests can enjoy all the fish and chips they can eat, and a Guinness beer or soda. For more than thirty-years, Gadaleto's has been the premier seafood purveyor in the Hudson Valley serving the residents of New Paltz and the region's renowned culinary community. Chef John Vargo joined Steven and Susan Gadaleto in 1998 to create a casual fish house-style restaurant adjacent to the seafood market.
