The Motorola Foundation and Viva Technology Join Forces with 6th Graders at Highland Oaks
Middle School in Miami, Florida
 
Miami, Fla. - April 19, 2004 /Send2Press Newswire/ -- The Motorola Foundation joins forces with
the national acclaimed Viva Technology program produced by HENAAC (www.henaac.org) at Highland
Oaks Middle School, Miami, FL on Friday, April 23, 2004, from 9:30 a.m. 3:40 p.m. One hundred
6th graders, their parents and teachers will participate in Viva Technology's innovative
engineering awareness program which motivates students to pursue careers in engineering,
science and technology, a mission supported by the Motorola Foundation.
 
On Viva Technology Day, science and engineering students from Florida International University
and the University of Miami will guide teams of 6th grade students through a series of fun and
competitive challenges designed to help them learn about engineering and science.  At the end
of the day, students will have the opportunity to win top honors in an educational raffle with
one student winning the grand prize of a home computer.
 
The keynote speaker is Jamie Borras, Corporate VP of the Technical Staff and Director of
Technology for Motorola's iDEN Subscriber Group.  He is a past HENAAC winner for Outstanding
Technical Achievement.  He has 27 years of experience and accomplishments in the field of
electronics and electrical engineering and has made significant contributions in science,
engineering and technology by leading development of new breakthrough products and technologies
that ultimately became the key elements of success for Motorola.
 
The Viva Technology Program includes a Parent component on April 22, 2004, where parents will
be presented with tools to help guide their children towards careers in technology. Parents
will also receive information about standardized tests, high school courses and engineering
programs at top universities which will be useful when their children begin to explore
educational and career options in technology and science.  Teachers will also have an
educational in-service on April 23, 2004 where they will be introduced to innovative ways to
broaden the math and science curriculum.
 
Since its debut in 2001, the Viva Technology Program has been conducted at schools in
California, Nevada, Texas, New Jersey, Ohio, and Florida, with more to be scheduled in the near
future in Illinois, Georgia and Louisiana. This year, Viva Technology launched its first after-
