CHICAGO, Ill. (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have stepped up enforcement to reduce undeclared and illegal hazmat shipments via airline, truck, rail, and ship. To help the regulated community understand the rules for multimodal hazmat shipping, Lion Technology, the nation's leader in regulatory compliance training, is presenting a how-to training series on the DOT, IATA, and IMDG regulations.

Undeclared shipments of hazardous materials are predominately aerosols and flammable liquids (e.g., paint and paint-related materials), as well as batteries, fireworks, dry ice, perfume products, and cigarette lighters.

Before a hazardous material is transported in commerce, it must be properly classified, described, packaged, marked, and labeled as prescribed by the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR). The DOT also mandates that all hazmat employees who "directly affect the safety of hazardous materials transportation" be trained and tested on these same regulations. Hazmat employees must have additional training on the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and IMDG Code if shipping by air or ocean.

Training on all three shipping modes will be held in St. Louis, MO on May 3-6; Chicago, IL on May 10-13; Detroit, MI on June 15-18; and Cleveland, OH on June 21-24. Training on the DOT rules (ground only) will be held in Grand Rapids, MI on May 6-7; Indianapolis, IN on May 13-14; Cincinnati, OH on May 17-18; Columbus, OH on May 20-21; Pittsburgh, PA on June 7-8; and Rochester, NY on June 10-11, 2010.

The fee for the two-day DOT workshop is $695 per person. Each additional day (IATA or IMDG) is $495 per person. Group pricing is available. Registration includes course reference materials, networking luncheon, certificate of achievement, and one year of follow-up support. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the workshop runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration is highly recommended.
